Looks like we will have to get a few deeper dives in first either way.
The itineraries of escorted dives include a deep most days, so a bit of practice first wouldn't go amiss.

Not really true, in the summer when all the dive centres are busy we nearly always have a good mix of divers some who want or are restricted to dives above 18m some happy to go deep and some who want techy boat. It's easy enough to accommodate everyone. If you came out as OW divers we'd put you in with a guide plus 2 or 3 other divers of similar skills/air consumption etc. This is one of the reasons most dive centres require the 1st dive to be a shallow(ish) check dive. There is nothing worse than being an experienced diver capable of making a 12l 40m dive last an hour if someone else in the group is less experienced and is on 80 bar by the time you get to the wreck and everyone has to turn round. That kind of experience spoils dives for everyone, puts pressure on the novice etc.

Just relax and come and have a lovely holiday, if you want to do your AOW then that's great, it will just be 5 dives during the trip with slightly more specific objectives and a little bit of reading. The idea behind AOW is to extend the range of your experience with solid pointers and guidance so that you learn from other's mistakes not your own.

Private guiding, don't follow the crowd.

Well, it's come around. Go in a week or two. We decided, talking to divewise, to do the AOW there, but near enough as soon as we arrive. Helped along by doing the dry suit course here, then a couple of days diving at NDAC, and some good dives to 18m there. And a dive to 18m at Nemo33. And going to do the Nitrox course out there as well.
Then we'll take a few guided dives, and take it from there.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

And the question is, Malta or Gozo?! I will have 1 week to use up...
