We sleep in the nip and have survived for many years. People are far too fussy and we, as a species, evolved to deal with that sort of thing.

Nevertheless, we clean our bedding every other spring, whether it needs it or not.

Happy to be a woke* feminist SJ(K)W snowflake in a godless universe, no matter what some experts think. And Braun was a twat who's not missed. At all.

As as residential building surveyor for 40 years, inspecting 6 houses per day, I went in some houses exactly as Dawn describes. The worst was where rubbish - and I mean rubbish - was piled up to the ceilings in every room with a 3 foot walkway to the next room. It was a nice looking detached house on a modern estate. She said she was "decorating" so was in the process of moving her furniture from one room to another. Er, no.
The only time I felt the need to report anything was an owner of dogs who had let everything go to poo. But I left it a couple of weeks from my visit so it wasn't too obvious I was the snitch. Cowardly, I know...
But I seemingly care more about animals that I do of people.

That's why you no longer see drinking fountains in toilets any more. If I remember right the blast zone of a flushed cludgie is anything up to 10m away.

People are too precious about household hygiene. Wash your hands and follow basic food safety, beyond that then the rest is marketing bollocks.

My favourite reads atm are medieval murder mysteries*. Their attitude to cleanliness, hygeine and food is a real eye opener and makes you realise how sterile we are attempting to make our environment.

Now I'm off for a chunk of hard cheese and some slightly stale bread (softened in ale) for my lunch.

*William Falconer series (book 1-9) available on Kindle Unlimited atm.

There is a school of thought that we are trying to make things too sterile and that more exposure to germs will actually improve our health because our immune system will improve - https://www.bbc.com/future/article/2...immune-systems

There is definitely a balance. We have gotten overly obsessed with cleanliness but equally lifespans didn't change much from the palaeolithic up to the 18th century. Hygiene, sanitation and medicine made a huge difference to how long you can expect to live. Kids might have more allergies and colds now but a couple of centuries ago infant mortality was massive. And you're not going to die because you had a paddle in a river. Oh wait...

The research into how the bacteria in you and on you (and the types) affect you is really interesting though. I make and eat/drink a lot of fermented stuff like sauerkraut and yoghurt and kvass. Apparently it is good for you but I honestly can't say I noticed much of a difference.

I was told recently that it can take between 2 months and 2 years for my gut bacteria to recover after a strong dose of antibiotics for an infected boil
If my post doesnt have a typo, then I have probably been hacked!

I've heard that as well. I think certain painkillers and anti-inflammatories do too. From what I've read diversity is more important than anything for gut bacteria, the broader the range of foods you eat the better.

There was something I was listening to last year that mentioned there's an uptick in dangerous fungal infections because the fungi responsible are becoming more heat tolerant due to global warming. Normal body temperature was enough to kill the bad ones, now they are getting better at surviving because they're evolving to match the climate heating up.

I think that was the first episode of "The last of us".

Although I am left with the overriding impression that people are devolving to fungal levels of iq quite quickly.

Eating a wide range of bacteria and fungi in your food will make very little difference to your gut biome unless they're ones that can survive a couple of hours in 10 molar hydrochloric acid. Shove them up your bum if you're that keen.
Definitely don't doubt Dawn - not if you value your life
