We work hard during the intervening period, often skip lunch and when the workload genuinely demands, we can still be found at our desks until 6 or 7 in the evening.

His gripe seems to be that there are things that aren't getting done. He's given us non-time bounded tasks to run as "side of the desk" projects when we have more than sufficient high priority work to fill our days. He then has the front to tell us that we're not meeting objectives by not completing the side projects, despite him telling us that they are lower priority than the stuff which already has us fully occupied. It appears that he thinks we should put in unpaid overtime to see the projects through...

I am not paid for overtime, my contract states 35 hrs and last week I did 42, because that was what I had to do to get the job done. In all honesty, that was an abnormal week, we're usually there or thereabouts on the hours (not that I used to count).

I have, in the past worked 80-100 hr weeks, because the job demanded it and because I was supporting real live military operations. You don't watch the clock, you do what needs doing and you get to rest when it's done. But no-one is shooting at us here. If he wants 70 hrs instead of 35, then I want double the salary, double the bonus, double the pension and double the car allowance, plus adjustment for the change in tax bracket...
oooh you will have poked the self employed martyrs nest with that one.

I have been in same position as you. working long hours to get job done. mainly at end of projects where construction has ate into commissioning. it is "expected" by far too many up food chain.

Unwrap a lot of things in sealed wrappers.
End up with a big pile of wrappers on my desk.
    Do stuff with the things.
    Finish.
    Look at pile of wrappers...
    It's a big pile.
Start picking them up with my right hand and stuffing them in my left hand.
They compress quite well so I can hold lots.
    Finally get them all.
    Carry them to the bin.
Put my hand over the bin and let go.
    BOING!!!!

Well some of them went in the bin.
    Start picking them up....
    Helium, because I'm worth it.
Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay sounded like a radical holiday opportunity until I looked it up.

Have you ever noticed the number of times that "things lobbed in the bin" result in rim shots and bounce off to all corners?

Given the area of the bin aperture, and the area around the bin to miss completely, hitting such a small target with such regularity must indicate a high degree of skill.

The Post Office or Royal Mail or whatever logo they are using nowadays.
Despite opting out of the unaddressed junk mail several times, it still keeps getting rammed through my door.
I complained on line last September and was sent another form. Still getting this sh@t.
I think I will save it up and dump it on their counter once I have a bin bag full.

Like you I have found the opt out to be meaningless.

They obviously do not want to stop an income stream. I wonder who I can complain to?

I've recently changed energy suppliers. The old supplier has taken my final meter readings and seemingly plucked a number out of their arse for the final balance. I've just spent an extremely frustrating hour on the phone to customer services who were entirely unable to explain where the figure came from and what had happened to the DD payment in November that doesn't appear on the bill. Just like last Saturday. Looks like a call to the ombudsman is on the cards.
