My electricity monthly DDR has gone from £143 to £290. I moaned and they let me reduce it to £250. I think I'll be turning off some of my computers (I normally have 6 or 7 running) when they are not needed.
I'll think of something witty some time soon.
Over the years I’ve seen various reports on the subject or parasitic power drain in the developed countries with estimates ranging from 10-25% of total use - probably increasing with more devices being “smart”.
We turn off or unplug all appliances, phone chargers, laptops, tv etc at the wall when not in use. Don’t know how much we save but it really isn’t that much effort to do.
I live on my own in a 2 bed flat on economy 7. Storage heaters and hot water only on overnight. No gas usage apart from a gas hob driven by Calor. My job is IT and I effectively run a very small data centre. This whole thing has made me do some testing. With only one essential server running plus required switches, UPSs, cameras, telephones and routers etc.. the base drain is about 350W. With a main PC, two monitors and a laptop now running plus some lights I'm using 870W. Monitors use a lot of juice. I'm now recording my meter readings every two days or so. Computers have been reset to start on bios timing when needed over-night. I'm really interested to see what I can get it down to.

Your electric is more than mine at work with 4 PCs running all day and a (VDU-less) server 24/7. And we have an electric forklift.
There are only two things that are infinite, the universe and Tory corruption and I am not sure about the universe.
With apologies to Albert Einstein.
For the whole of lockdown we’ve had two laptops, four monitors and usual domestic appliances going while paying £70/month for gas and electricity. I do hibernate stuff when not using it, like I have VMs in data centres close automatically about 8pm so I don’t pay for them doing nothing all night.
I do feel guilty about my desktop machine which I tend not to use that often but needs to be there when I do need it and especially the more monstrous pre prod boxes which are awful.
Shocking (sorry), isn't it? We've just had a smart meter installed and it's telling us we've used a whole 64p worth of energy before we've even got up!! Belts will need to be tightened.
