Opened up the safe one time for passports and the like, ahead of a trip back to UK. Went to close the safe only to find one of our cats, quick as a flash, had bedded themselves down inside the safe. Try to get same cat into a cat travel carrier and it's another story.

Just got a pulse oximeter from Boots and there was a free pair of 'Christmas glasses' in the parcel, which convert any point lightsource into an apparently floating 2d picture - ours was a Father Xmas face in rainbow colours. The purchased item has remained in its box and we've spent all morning pointing the glasses at fairy lights, LED room lights, phone torches and lights bounced off the mirror - I could do this all day! Also, there's a Great white egret in breeding colours in the flooded field opposite.

On Sunday we cleared the hoppers at the ends of two gutters. One we know gets bunged up with leaves from the Walnut tree next to it. The other has no trees close so we were rather surprised when OH pulled out a large cranesbill geranium and a lot of compost which was probably rotted moss originally!! We only checked it because the wall under it was showing signs of damp so it was a just in case exercise.

Re Pulse oximeter. Be very careful believing what it says. The pulse wave form is all important make sure it is good, if it does not have a waveform display throw it away! needs very still finger to avoid motion artefact. The cheap pulse oximeters available today are about 20 years behind development. I used to lecture on these instruments. The modern ones used in anaesthesia (not necessarily in the rest of the NHS wards where doubtless price is all important) are much better. When I looked at ventilators from various countries "donated" in the early stages of the covid epidemic it was obvious what intellectual property had been stolen and poorly reproduced it seems so with pulse oximeters , I bought a cheap one myself and have to be very careful using it.
Have a play with it when you are quite well and become familiar with the inaccuracies and problems you identify. Watch the pulse waveform and feel a synchronous pulse on the other arm Get a good stable reading and then move your finger!! The Chinese manufactured cheap pulse oximeters are at the level I was using in the 80s. The software algorithms driving them are freely available and of that date, it is difficult until using them in a need to know situation to realise how accurate they are!

On subject of Great White Egret, lucky you I saw one in southern France this summer on the same walk as a feeding osprey. Our first was at RSPB Middleton Lakes several years ago. It doesw appear having looked it up that the breeding colours are limited to a dark/black bill tip? What if it's stuck its bill in the mud?
