Landfill isn't the default for rubbish. Most councils in the UK reprocess waste rather than dumping it. The investment in technology has been huge. I worked on the design of Greater Manchester's which at the time was the biggest in Europe (possibly the world) at half a billion quid. They are currently running at less than 2% of all civic waste going to landfill. Depending on the technology used, there can be a variety of end products. Biogas, solid fuels, fertilisers, etc. Obviously the rights and wrongs of these end products are debatable but it does mean landfill isn't the first stop for rubbish when your bins are emptied. There are still a few holdouts that don't want to invest in reprocessing (unsurprisingly these are often the more wealthy council areas) but I imagine they will eventually get priced out of dumping.

There is very good technology for separating different waste streams from general shite (which is why you don't really need to get too precious about what goes in which bin, assuming you are in an area which does reprocess properly). A lot of what I worked on is covered by NDA's but mechanical separation is very sophisticated when it comes to picking stuff out of a heap of civic waste.

We don't make a song and dance about it because we are a nation of NIMBYs. I worked on a reprocessing plant for one of the big supermarket chains which took animal waste from their food production businesses and turned it into biogas and fertiliser. It handled waste that is extremely environmentally hazardous and very hard to dispose safely: abbatoir leftovers (guts and trimmings) and out of date milk (very toxic if it gets into water-courses and surprisingly corrosive long term). I have never worked on a project with so much secrecy around it, including defence work. That was purely because they were afraid of the public reaction. These plants tend to be very clean and very safe to live around. Even the internal air is scrubbed before it gets vented so there is next to no odours. But people don't want it near them.

On the Greater Manchester project, we had one depot which was the city's biggest existing tip. It was in the middle of a residential area, acres of rotting civic waste from the entire southern part of the city. You could smell it for miles on a calm day. We cleaned it up into a number of well sealed processing buildings, all with odour control systems and environmental management. Made a huge difference to air quality. You wouldn't believe the scale of objections we had to it from local residents. It made absolutely no sense whatsoever and was pure nimbyism in action.

We want the bins emptied but we don't want to know where it goes and it better not go anywhere near us.

Plus all the technology is stuff that Europe and Australia have been using for 20 years, it's a bit awkward when a declining tinpot nation that pretends it's a world leader has to admit it's actually at the back of the queue.

That is interesting Allan. I can see an upside and a rather obvious downside too. I guess with all this stuff it is a critical mass issue. If the styrene was banned then everyone would know and understand what to do with the biodegradable stuff. Nut I am always unpopular when suggesting more regulation

It's a great shame that this sort of pacakging in not used more aften but the problem is that it costs more than polystyrene peanuts. There was a leaflet about it in the package that we received with it in.

Great fun when the courier leaves your parcel on the doorstep and it rains. They do disappear in the compost heap though.

I still have a UK account but I could cut my costs in half by closing it and opening a Turkish version of the account. at least Netflix lets you travel, unlike Sky+ and Amazon Prime. I have now canceled my Sky account so they are £89.00 per month worse off. VPN used to work, but no more.

I keep Netflix but to be honest, I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep canceling that as well.
I watch much more Youtube than anything else.
