This is the reasoning behind my suggestion.
The more I think about this, I think looking at the computer is a necessity either way - I look at the computer if there's no visual point of reference to gauge whether I am perfectly neutral.
I made a demo double fishermans knot with the spare line, and as confident as I am that knot this would be capable of holding itself, I am going to go foreward with the suggestion to use permanent markers instead as this avoids the potential failure point of the knot altogether.
I do this^ and its free!!! Deco is an extremely inexact science and 6" is probably not actually measurable in real worlds so if you colour in about a foot of line with a sharpie at the 6m level that gives you a reasonable datum, you could add another at 9. Dont think I would tie another line on, not because knots weaken the line (I have a loop tied in the end of my line already so thats unlikely to be an issue) but simply that even a well tied knot will increase the chance of snagging. If you do want to add a different coloured line then the double fisherman's bend is probably the best to use or one of those weird barrel knots or maybe a bimini twist (but I have not tied one in a line as thick as a DSMB line but it should work) and add nail varnish for a bit of added security
If your intent on doing this with a spool, just tie a bloody knot in the continuous line at 5.583m (This Measurement is calculated for a AP self sealing dsmb obviously) you wont be able to see it in our VIZ anyway FFS!! so God knows why you want to use a marker!!!
