Whilst diving yesterday a strange one popped into my head.

Is there any difference in the refractive index from the gas in your mask if diving say 16/45 compared to air?

I have no idea what the properties of He are like for interfering with light but someone here is bound to know.

Answer; technically, yes there is a refractive index difference if you've filled your mask with 16/45 compared to air. There is also a refractive index difference at different depths (= pressures). But it's such a minuscule difference you'd have to do some serious experimentation to even be able to detect it, let alone notice it with yer senses.

I do know after getting stuck between the boilers on the Nevada 2 and coming as close as I have ever got to properly shitting it, that things are very much 1/3 smaller than they appear.
