Will i get away with a 3mm + 5mm longjohn shorty in 20 degrees

going to the canaries in a few weeks and have the option of taking a 7mm o3 semi or a 3mm + 5mm long john shorty.

recreational stuff i am guessing no more then 40-45 mins runtime.

have been told to expect 19-21 degrees - i tried the 7mm and i need 10kg in fresh water, its toasty and i suspect probably a bit ott, ideally would take a 5mm but mine disintegrated a couple of years back and havent bought another, so the other option in my warm water 3mm which i could put a shorty (no sleeves) over the top.

What do we think ?

Dived in Dorset early May. 12c water temp.
Wearing 5mm hood attached shorty plus a 3mm vest.
35mins dive and was comfortable.
But shivered for 30mins or so afterwards in the breeze.

23 degrees in Cyprus and I was in a thin worn out 3mm and I was pretty cold, doable but cold. With a bit more on top it would have been better.

Osprey 5mm is £80 delivered these days - I bought one for South Africa (17C ish) to replace my 5mm which was now a 3mm at best! I was fine with a decent hood and gloves, compared with the cost of a holiday that sounds cheap!

just found a rash vest i didnt use when i went to Truk so i guess i could put that under the 3mm suit too.

Cyprus last week, 5mm suit with a 3mm vest, I also wore a 7mm hood - 45 minutes at 25-30metres and was ok. Others without a hood were chilled by the end.

Personally in that temp I'd be in the 7mm and a 3mm hood, you will not be too warm.

In 2019 I was doing 2 40+ minute dive a day in 17 to 18c water in a 5mm with no hood or gloves and was fine.
The suit fit like a 2nd skin which probably helped.

Late last year in similar temperature with a less well fitting 5mm suit (I had put on a little weight so had to rent a suit as mine didn't want to do up) I needed to have a hood as well, and was still slightly colder than I would like.

21⁰ at the surface and 19⁰ at 45m in Canaries yesterday and I wore a Ri 2-100 drysuit. Overkill but better than being cold
