Repurpose an old heating oil tank

In the grounds where we volunteer, is an old metal tank on legs which I think probably contained heating oil. It certainly doesn't now, and both the drain taps are open and probably have been for some time.
We were wondering if it could be repurposed as a water butt, fed from a downpipe that runs beside it?
It's definitely empty, there doesn't even seem to be a smell of oil from the vents on top.
It's in an area well away from any mains water supply, and it would only be used for irrigation.
Most of the info on the 'net seems to be about oil contamination from spills, but we don't have any to spill!
It seems a shame to let the tank go to waste.

Is it painted inside? If you fill it with water it will rust. If it had oil in it the oil stops the rust. You could try it if you are sure there is no shit in it. If you water your garden with the shit then it might not do the plants a lot of good. Hard to say. Definately a "good thing" to collect and use the rainwater though - worth a bit of effort for sure.

If it rusts, it rusts. It'd be useful for several years, at least. I may close the taps and try pouring some water in, and leave it for a while to see what washes out when I open the taps.

Come to think of it, I did once have a beer that tasted like it came out of an oil tank. Alcohol free, I believe. Only once.

If you can get access inside it then have it steam cleaned. Old oil can stick to the surface for years. Old fuel can go varnish-y and you might never get rid of it.

But you can pick up a 1000l food grade IBC tank for about 50 quid second hand so would be cheaper scrapping it. Or just chance that there are no residues inside it.

Turn it into a big barbeque.

The one thing that's deterring me from angle grinding an inspection hole in the top. It could become a bbq in seconds.....

I have made a few barbies from 55 gallon drums. As they were used to store acetone, the first job was a flaming rag, on a very long stick, wafted over the filler cap. Quite a satisfying procedure.
