I have a CO2 blob (as backup) and I clean and check the mechanism (they are shit and will fail) and I fire it once or twice a year to confirm it works. It also has LP fill just in case. The last time it was used my backup by necessity was in 2015 (the day after I collected it from Aquatec) and since then it is mostly a maintained pocket object (now the Aqua elevation version).

For dives where I expect to deploy an SMB my crack bottle is used. This is filled from the same source as the suit bottle and I fail to see why any alternative is actually better!
Presumably you dress like a Christmas tree?I put mine in my pocket.
Good luck when the crack bottle pops.

Nope. No Christmas tree and I'm not dumb enough to stuff something I know I'm going to need somewhere inconvenient, when I can just unclip the reel from the D-ring on the AP wing. Things I probably won't need go in the pockets whilst stuff I want easily accessible (SMB, backup lights, cutting things) is easily available.

Thanks for the thought but I definitely don't need your luck!

Yeah, I discovered that after the the old Aquatec mechanism died. The current blob is getting silicone love and seems happier.

Also, the old SMB suffered the neglect too common with backups and, thankfully, failed in test rather than when required. That is why I insist on the LP fill option as a fallback.

    Awwwwwwww a BCD. How 1990s
I have nothing to do with BSAC any more apart from being a muggle member. So anything I write on here is likely to be complete bollocks. Hooray!

Certainly is - bought in 1994 and still going strong. I've tried a wing and prefer my old BCD.

I find reaching down and taking something out of my pocket reasonably easy.
Especially when it's the DSMB carefully stowed at the top of the right hand pocket for when I'll want it.

I detect some resentment from you.
I usually have to meet people to upset them so much.
    What's your problem?

I've also found that I can get my DSMB out of my pocket just as quickly if not quicker than unclipping it. I've tried both methods and prefer the pocket storage.

After the annoying experience of rolling backwards off the rib and having my DSMB unclip itself and sink faster than I could react, there are advantages to pockets...!
