    Question Seaskin zip waterproofing?

Rob has a Seaskin front loading membrane suit with (I think) a BDM metal zip. In a fit of enthusiasm, he cleaned the zip really well to the point that he removed the plug of waterproofing stuff at the bottom end and water poured in on his next dive. He bought some stuff which was recommended for Seaskin suits, but it turned out to be silicon grease for the plastic zip, so not nearly robust enough and the zip started to leak again. Does anyone know what is supposed to be in there? He said it was more like a stiff paste.

My drysuit diving in the past 20 yrs has been fairly limited but I used wax from ( I think) Northern Diver. Came in a bottle with a brush in the cap. You had to heat the bottle in hot water then when fully melted brush the wax along and between the zipper teeth and ends. because it was liquid you could really get into all the nooks and crannies.

Once it cooled and set zip was ready to go.

Seemed to work ok for me.

The slider should seal to the rubber end of the zip - the lump was probably a build up of beeswax. The beeswax gets forced into the end so does a good job of keeping the seal dry as it gets older.
The liquid wax is Zipslip - wax in a paraffin base. Easy to get online. It'll eventually build up in the same way but not as wrinkly as beeswax.

Obviously, I know how a drysuit works normally (and I'm not the one currently doing transects off Pembs while my suit fills, so I don't really care), but he was given to believe that this particular suit and zip should have a wodge of something just there and the water really does pour in without it and is reduced to a misery inducing trickle by the addition of silicon grease. The suit was purchased second hand and was completely dry for at least a year before Mr 'I know best' cleaned it. I wonder now if the previous owner knew it had a leak and put the wax in as a temporary fix to get it sold.

Zips are always a challenge to fix and it is probably best to bite the bullet and have the zip replaced. Not cheap but what is his comfort worth, especially as the water temps will be dropping soon

Have you tried talking to Seaskin? I think their suits are worth what you pay for them but they are generally helpful.

    Really? That's very generous.
