    Best cold water hood

Diving in 6 degrees in the first of January I had a bout of ice cream brain freeze. Maybe time to replace the 7 year old FE 7mm.

What’s the best cold water hood? Santi's 11mm? Others?

    Mine's a Waterproof 5/7mm. I like it. They do make a 5/10mm version.

The one that fits you. If you've been good with FE 7mm for 7 years I'd replace with the same.

2 hoods for me, first one goes on, then mask, then 2nd hood. That way the mask strap snubs the first hood in place and it can't wick cold water into it.

There are expensive anti-crush neoprene ones available (e.g K01) but I've been pretty happy with Waterproof H1. They are quite well made and seal well to your face considering how thick they are. I think I have a 7mm and 10mm version. They wear out eventually, just get another one.

I own and have used DUI, K01, Waterproof and Predator. The K01 have a terrible fit and crush really quickly but are warm (till they crush), The DUI crushes very quickly and breaks easily, Waterproof 10mm polar evoluted (I think thats what its called) is very warm and well made but leaves bare skin around the outside of mask (brrr). The predator hood is my favourite and what I usenow - I had Dennis make up one with a thicker mask edge - combined with a neoprene neck its super warm (I dived in some 1oC water recently).

I'd say get a hood that fits properly particularly over chin and around mask - not because its trendy or came with your suit - and for sure try before you buy!

2 hoods, 3mm one below a standard O3 one, only wear the two during the winter and the standard O3 one the rest of the time.

I've found fit to be the most important thing, especially one that doesn't flush cold water around your neck when you turn your head. I currently use a 7mm O3 hood which I've found to be very warm, confortable and stretchy. It had a very snmall facial opening which I had to trim back to accommodated my mask but it does mean that there is only a small area of exposed skin.

I think the comment on the one that fits is pertinent. I have tried on Ko1 but the fit for me was horrible. I’ve anO3 5/7mm which is great. If the FE works go with that unless you can try alternatives on.
