Website / App to explore sites & find centers to dive them

    Hi everyone,

My wife and I love travelling abroad to experience new dives. When preparing for our trip, we usually check the nicest dive sites in the area and the ones we would like to do.
However, we found that it is harder to get a sense of what dive centers were in the area and giving us the most chances to do those dives.

From this observation (and that was before we got kids, so much more free time on my hands!), I decided to build a website to try to tie together the dive sites & the dive centers.

I am now finally happy with the first version https://discovereef.com/ where you can easily (& hopefully in a nice way) search for scuba sites & dive centers. The next step would be to attract the centers so they can “update their profile” or give more details about what they do / where they usually go diving to help divers decide with whom to dive.

What do you think about the concept?

Any feedback or suggestion is welcome! Thanks in advance

This is suggested again and again and again.
About every two or three months here.
The 'I provide the site but other people provide the content' concept has never worked and will never work.

    Sorry.
    Helium, because I'm worth it.
Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay sounded like a radical holiday opportunity until I looked it up.

When the English language is shown by a US flag you're probably looking at the wrong audience.

Reefs are a blue water concept. We dive wrecks.

Alas it’s far far harder than you think to get this up and running. Quality control is the main challenge.

Do a search on this site, this idea has been discussed many many times, it's a well trodden path.

Quality control is another problem you will have. I looked at the Stoney Cove entry - average depth 35-45M (only if you have an excavator to do the last 10M) and visibilty 10-30M - I wish! One to ten would be more like it and the latter is extremely rare.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It's always helpful to confront to the (harsh) reality.

You are right Nigel, Wibs & Allan, I spent countless hours gathering, and trying to curate / improve the data - but I have personnally not been to all those sites & dive centers, this is why I tried to make the update experience really straightforward (no login process, and hopefully, easy enough to update) So you are right as well, I am counting on the overall diving community to improve the data.

And I am aware that there are (quite a lot) of other sites providing a list of dive sites, but my goal is to help divers find the right dive center to dive on that spot and couldn't find much info on that when I started on the website...

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback, it's always helpful. Feel free to keep them flowing!

PS Thanks Allan for 'Stoney Cove' feebdack, I updated it
PS2 regarding the US flag, I am aware I took the easy way out with that US flag. I was looking for a flag like this one https://www.gw2craftgold.com/ressources/img/flag_en.png but it wasn't available with the library I am using

I expect that a flag depicting the US over the UK would be even less popular, you'd be questioning both the provenance of the English language and our ability to function independently from the USA!!

    That aside, read this:

    https://www.thediveforum.com/showthr...on+dive+centre

There was another app/thread more recently, can't find that one though

Thanks Stuart for the post, I wasn't aware of that app. I'll check it out! It look indeed very similar to what I am trying to achieve.

Don’t use flags - they’re fundamentally political objects. Languages cross political boundaries. So just use the name in that language: English, Francais, Italiano, etc.

Regarding QA, it depends on the author's diving skills as much as their authoring skills
