If only it was only people's leisure activities but it's not. It's livelihoods, and quite a lot of them. Mine included.

Yep, sorry, that wasn't really very empathetic of me... and yep, I know it affects livelihoods, I've both close family and good friends that have basically lost their income overnight (think gymnastic coaches, martial arts instructors, personal trainers, yoga/pilates/physio)... ironic, given that the skills these people bring to the fore are the sort of things we need right now for our health and mental well being. But the need to make money can't ever be more important than the health and well being of the people (and society) you are making money from... can it?

I just can't see a way through right now.... if you can, then seriously, I'm all ears... would love to see those people (and diving etc, yourself) back out providing their services, and earning some income.

I think if you take a look through human history you'll find that it most certainly is.
Believe it or not, bananas do contain a small quantity of Musa Sapientum bananadine, which is a mild, short-lasting psychedelic

Perhaps to you, but it certainly isn't to me.

I didn't say it was to me (and to be frank that's a piss poor response to imply otherwise and attempt to impugn my character). I'm saying that history shows your statement to be absolutely incorrect. Since the dawn of time, over and over again, humans have shown that health and well being comes second (at best) to power and wealth. Do you think the British Empire was created by being nice to people? Or any other empire for that matter. What about the slave trade? Wars waged for millennia for land and spoils. Masses incited to wholesale slaughter of each other on some manufactured existential threat (often with a religious connotation). People are easy to control when they are frightened. Countless millions throughout history have died from poverty while others live in luxury. It's the way it has always been. But somehow in 2020 we're 'different' eh? We're 'special'?

Tell you what, once you've finished feeding your unicorn over there in Utopia perhaps you'd like to slide down your rainbow into the real world and take a look around.

If it's not to you, and it's not to me, then why do you feel the need to question it? You don't like your character being "impugned" but that's exactly how your initial post came across to me.

Nope, we sure are not different or special. Just the same gullible idiots we have always been voting for the ones living in luxury to ensure they stay that way. I think both you and Stuart are right, you're looking at how it is and he is looking at what is could be, should be. But I think your version is the one that will win. Look at the worthless filth in government right now. Anyone that thinks they give a crap about how many people die really is too far gone to ever see the light.

My martial arts centre is still charging monthly membership fees. He is doing online classes to help justify costs. He say's if he does not charge fees he will fold. Can't your instructor friend do the same? I know it is not perfect, but I would hate to see the centre go for good.

Well, sadly, yes it usually does. I wish it wasn't the case but that's not how the world works it seems. This is a capitalist society, and the clue is in the name. Just look at how the lock-down is being lifted in England and those who are lobbying for it in government. Hardly a collection of socialists and lovers of the common man. Money is being lost and risks need to be taken according to those making policy. We'll all get to take the bulk of the risk and they'll get to make the bulk of the money.

Neither can I. There's ideas around in the short term as greatwhite said, but that cannot last forever. We've been teaching via VC for the entire lock-down to stave off the draining funds but at the end of the day, you need to get in the water, the gym, the sparring mat or whatever you call it. If the lock-down runs until this time next year, there won't be anyone left operating unless they can swap to 100% online-only operation. Even if they've survived, the charter boats/pools/gyms/venues will have collapsed most likely.
