As we panic about covid-19... the planet struggles on with its own virus (humanity). Luckily both will pass ... its just the latter will be more serious for us.

Given the amount of abuse the GBR endures from agricultural run-off, Crown of Thorns, bleaching and cyclones, it's amazing it's stood up as well as it has. I guess it's so large that usually only one part of the reef takes a hammering at any one time, making it easier for it to be recolonised from the tougher sections. The pressures on the reef desperately need easing though. There's no short-term easy solution to bleaching, but reducing agricultural and sediment runoffs is something that could easily be done to reduce the amount of crisis the reef ecosystem has to face at the same time - as well as limiting dive numbers around Cairns, or at least getting rid of the Scubadoos and introducing some basic rules (no gloves, no knives, some kind of proof of basic buoyancy control) - the main thing is the run-off needs to stop, now.

Any "relief" seems unlikely with Scomo in charge. I'm surprised he doesn't think the "crown of thorns" is from Jesus and should be worshipped.
