TBH, that's not a lot of help! Wood mice have more obvious eyes and ears and don't reek of wee. They only come in during the winter. They have a white/grey belly, I think house mice tend to be brown all the way round. A house mouse will freak out if cornered and blindly try to escape, wood mice will find it an interesting experience.
I probably had house mice in my garage then as the place stank! I only caught a brief glimpse once so couldn't identify them. They've eaten all the bird seed now and have probably moved out as it no longer smells as bad.

I've heard of self-sufficiency types eating roadkill, but you've clearly gone a stage further...

Nothing wrong with road kill, I've got half a freezer full of venison that cost me nothing except for a load of claret all over the back of the trailer and some very funny looks driving through middle of lancaster.

As far from the sea as we could be, except when we can actually get in it.

It sounds very much like 'what have we already got plenty of in this lab that we can use?' Not sure how strong the urge is in lab rats anyway - they are bred to be very docile, as are the mice. Hamsters on the other hand, remain the spawn of satan.
