    Divemaster qualifying dives

Can you achieve PADI dive master with 60 dives all in Stoney Cove?

    Yep

"Logged at least 60 scuba dives including experience in night diving, deep diving and underwater navigation"

By Stoney, do you mean a benign non-challenging dive site such as the shallow, clear, warm water as is found diving around the Mediterranean.

DiveMaster is just some marketing tosh for shop assistants, general training assistants and dive guides. It’s certainly not a certification of a breadth and depth and mastery of skills in different environments and diving styles. That you can "qualify" as a DiveMaster with 60 dives is testament to that fact.

Why would you want to? Is your aim to get a bit of plastic to show off to your friends, or to learn and gain as much as you can from the course? If the latter, then you want to experience as many different scenarios and environments as possible... you also need to satisfy the instructor that signs you off that your experience is sufficient to allow you to perform the function. If you came to me with 60 dives at Stoney, I wouldn't sign you off, I wouldn't want to put my name against your cert.

If someone has demonstrably met all of the performance requirements for the course, I don't think you have much choice in the matter if they are your student, but it begs the question why anyone would set up a DM course for someone that only included such a limited range of experience...?!

If I was going to dive in Stoney Cove, a SC Divemaster would be vastly superior to any salt-water Johnny DM.
Likewise the same SC Divemaster would be pretty rubbish in Johnny's patch.

Nowt wrong with being a SC DM, just as long as he stays in SC or sites very similar.
Which is why every agency going rams it home the danger of a change in circumstances.

I'm a cold/warm water BSAC/PADI Instructor, but i've never done Ice-diving, so obviously that makes me shit at
    all diving

But Tel, you’re doing a disservice to your years of extensive experience born from many years of diving in a wide range of environments. Precisely the same experience lacking from the trainee DiveMasters.

Actually it’s worse than that as you can start the DiveMaster with 50 dives — with includes all the dives for OW, AOW and Rescue Diver. By definition no experience required

How analogous to Dive Leader is DM?

You can get DL signed off with a similar number of dives - but the experience dives ensure the wider range of, well, experience lol...

I, on the other hand, have been ice diving and I'm still shit.
