I read a different website and it didn't say. Still can't work out how the sea would trigger a spear gun but there you go. Maybe it was Poseidon was getting revenge on behalf of his creatures and thought that as it was a relatively minor offence, unleashing the kraken or a few tsunamis might be a bit of an over-reaction?!

I don't think it's a minor offence - some moron has clearly been practising locally, one of our wrecks is full of badly wounded wrasse and cod.

Is the objection to spear fishing per se (which I've always thought of as a selective way of fishing for the table) ?

My tuppence worth on this. I have no issues against spear fishing if it is done without scuba, used for catching something for the table and done by a competent person.
With scuba, it should be banned.
I am against any animal killing for sport. (Except for humans in some cases.)
Competency should be proven to prevent unnecessary suffering.

If God had meant us to breathe underwater, he would have given us larger bank balances.

Using scuba would increase the competency - insisting on free diving is adding a sporting element and a time pressure isn't it ?

True, but I think scuba gear gives too much of an advantage to the hunter.
    Just my opinion.

I object to wankers honing their skills on live fish. It's not just one or two, the bloke clearly can't hit a barn door but that doesn't stop him having a good go.

As far from the sea as we could be, except when we can actually get in it.

"Boris! Do you fancy having a go at Spearfishing?"
"...are we human, or are we diver?"
