WiFi AP / Ubiquiti
So, Im after a new AP, something that'll give ;
- Service in the event of a broadband failure (ie LAN still works)
- good coverage
- dual band (minimum)
- offers a couple of ports of ethernet
- some analytics/insight into traffic
I like the look of the ubiquiti stuff, but it ends up being a lot of boxes to do what i want. In an ideal world I'd want a single box solution....
A Ubiquiti AC AP Pro would give you everything except a "couple of ethernet ports" - it only has a single secondary ethernet port.
Great bit of kit and highly recommended.
Unifi AC Pro is very good. It is just a raw AP with a pass-through port. You will need an injector to power it by PoE, unless you already have a PoE switch. This doesn't come as standard with the AC Pro. There is a 'lite' version that's cheaper and does have the injector.
You will need 'controller' software running on something to set it up. It doesn't need to be on permanently, just when you need to change something. I think you can even use a phone.
We have Unfi USG (router that does the traffic stuff), a US-8-60W switch that does the PoE and monitoring by port & an AC Pro. Handles everything in the house with ease.
There is a new product coming from Ubiquiti, the 'Unifi Dream Machine'. This has everything in one package, but it hasn't been released yet.
