And if you're going to eat the Japanese why stop there? There's the Faroese, the Chinese and Russians who are capturing belugas for marine parks, Iceland, Norway, Mexican fishermen finishing off the vaquitas - where do you draw the line? Are only big whales important? I still think the death of mankind is the way to go.
I doubt we will have to wait too long, war, disease, yellowstone, a big rock. All potentials for a wipe out.

As you say with the way things are going worldwide, we are heading for very large scale disaster.

Politically - nationalism is on the rise with no thought as to what happened the last time.
Disease - we have gotten lucky with a number of diseases recently (ebola, flu). All it takes is someone to fly while incubating one of those and it will spread like wildfire. One person could potentially infect 300 on a flight without knowing it which means the outbreaks that have been seen so far would be child's play.
Natural disasters - there are a number of potential planet killers that we are potentially overdue for (ice age, mega volcano, meteor strike to name a few).
Global warming - rising sea levels will decimate a number of countries in the relatively near future if nothing is done. Part of that will also be the change in oceanic flow which might cause the jet stream to divert or shut down giving us a climate more akin to the latitude we live at.

Brings to mind Frankie Howard as Cassandra. "Woe, Woe! and thrice Woe!!" Exit tearing hair.

What, with sea level rise and the shutting down of the Atlantic Conveyor, I wonder whether Birmingham has started planning for the icebergs yet?

Also worth bearing mind that the next period of glaciation (remember, we are already in an Ice Age) is only 2 cold summers away...

Yeah! No planning for icebergs we're on the 100m contour here. So only planning for a icebound port in winter. But the Ice Giants! The Jotnar that's a different problem. It may well be that the liveable area of planet earth is going to shrink rapidly (ice on one side , desert on the other) and war over resources (it was ever thus) will be inevitable.

No need for the liveable area to shrink. We're outgrowing that at a rate much quicker than the waves can take it.

Most places claiming loss of habitat to rising sea levels are actually victims of their own environmental hooliganism and population expansion.
An example being the Sundarban Islands. We're told they are going under. Turns out that local human activity and long term geological processes have left the fragile islands open to erosion. Mismanagement/loss of the mangrove forests being a huge factor.

Of course the Ice Giants will come, people worship and call to them each winter. Remember that next time you help a child build an effigy of them. Don't let the carrot nose and coal eyes fool you!
