Having been fortunate enough to find a wreck back in 1973 (HMS Dartmouth) which was the second to be scheduled under the Protection of Wrecks Act and to be involved in research about the ship's history was an amazing experience. Just looking at letters written by the captain back in 1689 in beautiful copperplate handwriting using a quill pen really brings history alive. It was these letters and a story handed down by word of mouth for almost 300 years which enabled the fate of the ship to be determined. A once in a lifetime experience.
