It can’t be Friday already ..

Sensible answer . Get yourself a 7 litre stage if you want a “ shit happened , get me home “ option . It can be used later on in your diving as a stage for ADP etc.

I've got one, sell them at my LDS. Worked out cheaper than a pony setup too.

At the risk of stirring up the hornets nest...

A 3l pony can be a confidence blanket or a regulatory compliance tool that is valid in a certain set of circumstances. I'm going to presume, for the sake of harmony and goodwill that you have perused the myriad discussions both here and in The Other Place on this subject and that your intended purpose fits this bracket. Please, for the love of (insert deity here), DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS PART OF MY POST!!!

That said, equipment wise, a 3l, tank mounted pony cylinder is an evolutionary dead end. If you ever move on, you'll not need it again unless/until you get a rebreather.

    Buy a DS4 and a/x tx40/50 And that WILL get re-used. It's a solid choice.

If you buy an al40, you can back mount it, or stage mount it, personal preference, and it will be a sound investment as a future deco cylinder for you shallow deco mix (2 Deco gas diving) or for a single deco gas for a lot of intro level accelerated deco for years to come.

Al40s are becoming a lot more mainstream and although rare as rocking horse poo second-hand (for the reasons above), are cheap enough new these days .

    Good luck and happy hunting!

Just ignore them, a 3ltr pony is fine for the range it will operate in

You don't chose bailout on cylinder size you choose it on gas requirements. If a 3ltr covers it, it covers it.

A 3ltr pretty much covers 30 ish m no deco diveing for people with a panic SAC of up to 40 lpm

At a 40 SAC gas switch to 36% at 29m that's 552ltrs required to ascend and do a 4min safety stop at 3m

    A 3ltr has 705ltrs so that's an approximate 30% gas reserve

On no other cylinder does any on ever work on cylinder size. Everything else is done on gas required. Its so silly.

AL40s bit big, stupidly expensive to buy and maintain and id rather go steel 7

PS: I own a AL40 (bought as a job lot) never used it

Although your opinion is as valid as mine, I disagree with every point that you make.

I just sold my Ali40 after a couple of years gathering dust in the garage. Fine in the water, but too big to lug about for bimbles. The 3L gets to go diving fairly regularly. The guy who bought the Ali40 wanted it for his child who was doing something with PADI. Quite sweet.
