January 2018 Underwater Photography photo compo - Split Level

Very pleased to kick off the monthly underwater photography photo competition for 2018.

The theme for this month's competition is SPLIT LEVEL.

What's a split level shot? In a nutshell, it's a photo that's taken with the camera half in and half out of the water so that you get the classic 'waterline' split level effect so beloved of travel photographers. It's not an easy effect to get right - you ideally need calm water or a nice big dome port (or a combination of the two) :-)

I'm not worried where the shot is taken as long as it's not in a bath, swimming pool etc - it has to be in open water (fresh or salt). Rivers, lakes, quarries (!) and, of course, the sea both here and abroad all good. Even rock pools are acceptable as long as the rock pool isn't in an aquarium ;-)

Here's an example photo I took back in November to get you started...

Me too. This is a toughie and I am sure it will exclude many people but I am really looking forward to seeing what others will come up with.

It's really hard to do because I always have drips on the lens - especially when the vis is good!

If you look at my example shot, you'll see the same effect on the 'Suzuki' logo. The only way to reduce this effect is to use a glass dome - water tends to run off them easier :-)
