I've got some of these which seem to do the trick. Just make sure that you clean the mask well first and don't practise repeated mask clears ot they will move around.

    These

It's a decent IST mask with bifocals for almost the same as a standard mask and are unlike the stick on ones
that seem to have a habit of being anything but.

As far from the sea as we could be, except when we can actually get in it.

They shouldn't move at all once in place as it's not water that holds them in place. Make sure both the insert and the mask lens are free of contaminants/release agents etc. Prepare a bowl of warm water with a couple of drops of detergent in just to take care of any residual grease. Fill the mask with the water & put the insert in below the surface, gently rubbing it between your fingers to remove any bubbles or dust. Position the insert and press it firmly in to place, sliding it to get it in the right position. Empty the water out of the mask , wipe it & allow it to dry. If everything was CLEAN it will stay in place because the two surfaces are 100% in contact with one another. I have a pair on my spare mask which lives in my drysuit thigh pocket with no issues & I'm a great fan of using them on cheap sunglasses instead of going for expensive prescription ones.

One of mine has stayed on without any trouble but the other has a tendency to slide around after some helpful person left it in the mask rinsing bucket on the first day of last week's trip! It will need to be fully cleaned and re-attached. I did repare the surface exactly as you suggested. Another of our group has found that prolonged immersion will tend to make them come loose but if you just rinse the mask and avoid leaving it in water, they should stay attached OK.
