    SS Mendi Ship's Bell

Witness an incredible moment of maritime history as BBC South Today discovers the bell from the SS Mendi.
It sank off the Isle of Wight in 1917 with the loss of more than 600 men. They were mostly black South Africans going to help the war effort in France. The wreck is now a protected grave but thirty years ago rumours started to circulate that the ships bell had been secretly recovered by divers. Over the years, our reporter Steve Humphrey tried to find out if it was fact or myth. Early this morning, after an anonymous tip off, he found the bell left for him at Swanage Pier

"rumours", "secretly recovered", usual press b*ll*cks.

It was only in March 2009 that the UK Ministry of Defence designated SS Mendi's wreck site as a protected place and the bell was lifted a long time before that. Perhaps those concerned were a bit delinquent on their reporting to RoW, who knows? "Years trying to find out", sounds like tosh, just have to ask in the right places and convince people your not going to be a knob with any information they give you - just saying!

Good on the salvor for handing it over. Press get a good story, Historic England publish a book, the story of SS Mendi and these brave souls gets retold and the bell will "probably be given to a museum"

    All's well that ends well
