    This is great, thanks everyone.

The bulk of the recommendations seem to be for Tenerife or Lanzarote. What about Gran Canaria and El Cabrón Marine Reserve? Any experiences to share there? Davy Jones Diving in Arinaga is promoting that area pretty hard.

For Marine reserves, if you find yourself on Lanzarote and can arrange with one of the centres to take you to La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago Marine Reserve, apparently the largest marine reserve "in Europe". (I'm not sure the canaries are geographically in Europe, but I know what they mean!!)

You might even be able to take a boat from one of the other canaries, but it would take quite a while!!

El Hierro is great diving - really good but I could not recommend it for a family holiday by a pool.

Another vote for Safari. We also hired a car for a couple of days and went exploring that was really good as well and we are planning to go back and explore further.

What - you want to not see a single virgin? No need to go so far. An evening in Plymouth Barbican can deliver that for you

Deep Blue Diving in Fuertaventura get my vote.
