Just the heads up on the trailer for a film I'm creating, to be shown at the Kendal Mountain Festival this November.

I'm also giving a talk on this cave diving project. Between the 3 of us (Myself, Richard Walker and Ash Hiscock) we've extended the second sump in this cave by 400 metres with an average depth of about 45m, 50m at the deepest point in 7 degrees of water.
The project is continuing and we've been filming the progress.

To see the final film, head to the Kendal Mountain Festival website and book your tickets. There will also be a talk from Jason Mallinson on the Thailand rescue, so I'm told.

This thread has been too quiet.

Another year, another pilgrimage to Mexico, another video:

Always experimenting with different techniques for getting light in to dark places, time always goes so fast...

Cool. What are the opaque pools of green, around 1:20?
I don't want to get technical or anything, but alcohol IS a solution

Thanks. It's hydrogen sulphide (or to be completely precise hydrosulphuric acid, i.e. hydrogen sulphide gas dissolved in water). There is a halocline there - this cenote is close to the coast so the salt water intrusion comes quite shallow, about 5 metres depth here. The H2S is slightly denser than the fresh water, but very slightly lighter than the saltwater and gets trapped at the boundary, so you'll only see this effect where there is a halocline. You see the same thing on a larger scale at e.g. Cenote Angelita https://vimeo.com/77922751.

Would be interesting to know if anyone has pushed through the layer.
H2S is dangerous stuff and rots out copper destroys your sense of smell and kills you pretty quickly.

The classic tourist dive involves swimming beneath the hs2 layer. It's spooky and smells pretty bad. But a very cool place to see

Did you watch the second link I posted? https://vimeo.com/77922751 It is strong enough that you can smell the bad egg odour permeating through your skin even when wearing a mask, but not fatal when you have a reg to breathe off, at least not for short exposures. It does make some people nauseous and turn your brass black though.
