Question Niggling Kit Issue - Mask

    Hi all,

First post for a little while... thought I'd seek some expert advise from the membership at TDF

So.. some time back I bought a new mask, Hollis M1, love it.. low profile, fits well, can't say I've had any problems with it at all...

I was so pleased with it, I bought another as my backup mask.

This mask however appears to be the evil twin... This mask will simply not stay clear, constantly fogging up...

It's been treated to the usual, toothpaste, spit and it's had the lens burnt several times with a lighter...

Yet, whenever I take it from my pocket whilst practicing mask recovery skills, lo and behold... foggy...

What niggles me is that this is my backup mask... so, on that occasion where I really do need it, when I'm perhaps already in a state of elevated stress I don't really want the added funof looking through a cloud!

I did consider contacting Hollis, but I've had this mask now for well over a year, it just sits silently in my pocket, planning my demise, so I doubt they'd exchange it.

Other than the commercial products anti-fogging products, spit and a lighter - any other suggestions!?
    Regards

    Rob

Sounds like a silly question, but do you spit in it before each dive before you get in the water?

Try swapping the masks between dives and see if the problem persists.

I.e. is part of the problem that it's spending it's life in a pocket and never being used.

I have 2 identical masks and I use a different one for each dive.

Hi Sir Logun - thanks for the reply!

It's funny, that did cross my mind the other week, and the answer is no. Because it's a backup mask and stays in the pocket, it hadn't ever occurred to me to spit into it and then put it into my pocket again. However, I have chosen to use it several times (including in the pool) and it gets spat in then - and still fogs up...
    Regards

    Rob

Hi Ron, thanks for the reply.

I'll give it a go, although I'm not sure whether it will make any difference. I didn't have this problem with the first mask, so although that one gets used more, it didn't mist up like this in the first place... one treatment was sufficient for use.

Not sure how my spit and a bit of thumb rubbing will resolve it if the lighter couldn't for example..

Tis really annoying as I do like the mask and would typically recommend it.
    Regards

    Rob

+1. There's a number of good reasons to rotate your masks. When you actually need a backup mask, you really don't want to find the thing's disintegrated in your pocket.

Run it through your dishwasher a few times on a normal wash with your dishes.
I have nothing to do with BSAC any more apart from being a muggle member. So anything I write on here is likely to be complete bollocks. Hooray!

Try sticking it in the dishwasher a couple of times.

I regularly chuck the club masks in, well once every six months
and it does the trick for most.
