Dive hoods, masks and medium length hair

For the second time I have been away on a trip and found that my slightly unkempt hair has resulted in me carrying out an improvised pen knife scissors hair cut as otherwise I would be plagued by a leaking mask.

It seems that at a certain length my fringe can be easily tucked under my dive hood but when I ever so slightly lift the hood around the edges to let the mask skirt seat properly some hair inevitably finds its way under and then spend the dive clearing the pooling amount of water every few fives minutes. Trying to take a mask of under water and re-tuck hair before replacing the mask sounds like a right pain.

Any suggestions on how to get around this? I am considering buying a swimming cap and putting this on first before the hood.
Why is it that with everything in life I always find a more difficult way of doing it (and not intentionally)

pull your hood back off your head. put the mask back on holding your hair out of the way like you would in the pool then pull your hood back over your head.

My hair is no where long enough for a ponytail.

I wear the hood over the mask so:
put on hood and pull it down so it is all round your neck,
sweep hair out of the way (if I had some it would be nice),
put on mask and seat it nicely,
pull hood back up covering the strap and the mask surround.

I can do this with thick gloves on and in the water so it beats trying to seat a mask back under a hood which never works.
    Helium, because I'm worth it.
Waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay sounded like a radical holiday opportunity until I looked it up.

Wet your hair first and push it back off you face, hood then mask, sorted. I have similar issue but it part of my buddy check and as I use lube on my dry suit I find that slicks my hair back anyway!

Hood over mask is not easy, especially in a thick hood
