At least a step forward towards the end of the scourge of scallop dredging.

They're going to have to do a lot of modification to improve on their current 0.5 scallops per pot.

And while the dredgers rip the arse out of the sea bed, recreational divers are still restricted to 6 scallops per boat per day in Scotland.

For some reason people hero-worship this arsehole like he is some sort of messiah. Richest man in the world about to cut 10% of his staff on a feeling.

I take it someone has considered the "novelty effect" - Scallops going "whey everyone, what's this, oh hang on..." - it might wear off after not very long...

    That's ridiculous.

Mind you, it needn't be too much of an issue. I used to enjoy diving out of Portland on Protector, skippered by Ivor Jansen. It was a big RIB with a cabin and a lift; on scallop runs he'd collect them from me as I shuffled off the lift.

I'd slowly de-kit and by the time I'd taken my fins off he was offering them to me and my buddies in a pan, always perfectly cooked. I don't think I ever took any off the boat, but I was happy for Ivor to keep the excess.

The recreational divers limit reminds me of the run up to the implementation of the PMRA, where recreational divers were accused of desecrating "war graves*" when spidging**. The loud anti-diver voices never gave a fig about the destructive wire-dragging of shallow superstructure, or commercial salvors blowing holes in the wrecks to remove anything made of any sort of interesting metal.

*Technically none of the wrecks are / were "war graves".

** I never spidged on any sensitive wrecks. I was always too busy polishing my halo.
Happy to be a woke* feminist SJ(K)W snowflake in a godless universe, no matter what some experts think. And Braun was a twat who's not missed. At all.

    * Had to add woke; couldn't resist.

Yes and I can't imagine that anyone will make a business from that - I bought fresh scallops from Portland on Saturday for £1 each in central London; a lobster is something like £30 upwards, depending on size

Another advantage of an Orkney live aboard. Our group on a scallop dive pulled about 120, about 20% were put back as being a bit small. The rest were eaten on board Valkyrie, either as evening meal or with scrambled eggs in the morning.

Here's one trying to get away!
