You could buy the same crappy tube from a specialist diving supplier and add 15 quid to the price tag and sleep at night. But as the saying goes, you can polish a turd...

I've got an old BSAC manual that shows you how to make your own reel out of wood if you want the pattern ?
A word of caution - the pattern has an error in it. I have a wooden reel that I made myself.

Bungy chord from a DIY store works just as well.... all this Tyre inner tube was just what they had available, not necessarily then only solution!

And there was me thinking some bright spark had the idea to join a load of loops together in a ring, fill it with air and hold tyres up with it. You learn something new every day :-)

I haven't found the error yet as I'm still looking through local skips to find the right wood, I'm thinking balsa for a light weight reel
Next from the book will be the compass with tobacco tin and cling film
I'm liking the kitchen knife in a bit of old garden hose that I have seen others with, maybe I'll go for that next
