Inner tube sizes for Ali 40 & 80?

The title pretty much says it all.

While I'm sure the Stage Bungees I can buy from DIRZone are wonderful, I'm sure I can just grab an old inner tube and cut that to size instead.

Cut the tube on the diagonal and you can use pretty much any size you like.

I just used to use a bit of bicycle inner tube tied with a knot. The knot was really easy to grab when wearing gloves.

Nothing like making do with home made crap when you can buy the proper tool for the job
I've got an old BSAC manual that shows you how to make your own reel out of wood if you want the pattern ?

We're talking about a piece of rubber here, not home-modding a rebreather.

Same here, but I pass the tube through a practice golf ball even easier to grip the with gloves.

So what, exactly, is the right tool for this job? I was one anal too, looked for, and found, the perfect bit of inner tube.

Then I saw sense and used bicycle inner tube. Worked better than the "correct" inner tube.

Or maybe I'm just not gullible and would like to spend my money on actual diving?

Use the right kit and go diving ?

Cheers Gary. Down next month. Might try and add a friday deep dive to the weekend.

I'm confused. As an adherent to an approach to diving which some would describe as overly-obsessive-compulsive about detail and "right" kit (DIR, in case it's not blatantly obvious!), I'm very happy with bike inner tube which does what it needs to (holds the hose against the cylinder), is easily available and, when knotted, allows easier stowing. The latter is particularly useful when handling multiple stages with cold-water gloves.

I'm unsure what's not "right" about this, but look forward to being educated, given my apparent strokery...

What do you think the design for stage bands came from? Think it might've been rings cut from inner tube that just about every cave and technical diver ever used? Just maybe?
