    Anti fogging

So as we are not meant to spit in masks etc now what are people using on their masks to stop them fogging up ?
I trust my rebreather implicitly I just don't trust the owner

I gob in my mask, not yours.

If you're properly hydrated, it won't be a complete wretch to get enough spit.

Spit mate. Only consideration so far is taking a bottle of water to rinse with as boats have done away with the rinse bucket. Couple of boats have had bottles or jugs to avoid cross contamination.

I'm assisting in the pool next month (for DiveAbility) and we've been told not to spit in masks but use commercial mask defog or dilute detergent instead. I guess the risk is having gob on your fingers and spreading nasties that way rather than it getting in the pool.

I've used diluted baby shampoo (doesn't sting the eyes) for years after I was nearly lynched on a dive boat in California for spitting my mask. The horrified looks I got, you would have thought I had stood up and exposed myself to all on board. 'Ain't you Brits heard of anti-fog? That's just plain disgusting, all those germs!'. I said 'but they are just my germs'. However, that did little to calm their inflamed sensibilities so I have avoided spitting in my mask when travelling in case I upset those with delicate constitutions!

How do they cope with flushing out your pee valve?

That would probably give them apoplexy!

Baby shampoo is a revelation. My mask has never been cleaner.

BSAC published some guidelines on this and recommended using a piece of potato to rub into the glass for those too tight to buy baby shampoo.

I have been using a little spray bottle of cressi anti fog - it's about £7 for a 60ml bottle. I've been using it ever since I noticed the black gunge growing in my clear skirt mask. I figured that the black skirt mask must have the same growth even though it can't be seen.

I stopped using the communal mask spittoon years ago and continue doing the same as normal and take a 1.5l bottle of tap water on the boat (the bottle lasts a couple of seasons) and I spit into the mask and rinse from the bottle. Having water on hand is also helpful for keeping hydrated before diving and....

just before I remove the drysuit I use the same bottle of water to flush a few mouthfuls of water through the tube of my pee valve. I've had the neglected pee valve experience and will never repeat it!

That's the reality of diving for ye.

Talking of spitting in the mask, I've never rinsed afterwards. I just spit in it, rub it in with a finger, then put the mask on my head back to front whilst kitting up, then turn it around just as I'm about to stand up and jump off. When in the water I let some in, rinse and clear for that full 3D visual experience. I also spit in my backup mask before I put it in my pocket.

Rinsing the pee valve prior to getting out of the drysuit is another little ritual. Stand on the diver lift and use a bottle of fresh water which I 'pump' through my mouth and blown through to clear the whole pipe. Repeated at least five times.

Hmm am I the only one with a vision of Wibs bent double on the dive lift trying to reach his pee valve to give it a blow job ?????
