Really? I mean I have a vr3 but an ostc pisses all over it

As woz says, no comparison but vr3 does the job and if budget is important you can get two second hand units of the price of a single ostc.
vr3 is annoying at first but not hard once you get the basics. ostc is dead easy to use, unless you are nick_b ;)
(I traded up from vr3 to ostc bacause i didn't like the deep stops and bailout to OC was annoying)

The vr deep stops are bloody annoying.

oh yes, always wanted one at 22m or 23m when if there was a 50% switch ahead

VR3 is probably significantly cheaper to buy 2nd hand but not sure what the hardware support is like these days if it develops a fault (might be worth checking).

Used OSTC 2n's seem to go for between £450-£550 at the moment but I haven't seen that many come up.

The OSTC 2 series is still very much a current product so therefore the software is still actively being developed in terms of features but a VR3 should do everything you need it to.

Never used a VR3, but to be honest, unless budget is a major limiting factor, i don't know why anyone would not choose the OSTC.

If budget is that much a factor, it's probably not worth considering the OSTC anyway.

Because they'd choose the Shearwater Petrel instead ;)

Not if budget is in question they wouldn't! ;)

I wouldn't, the MK II gives me everything I need...

I have both... as a stand alone, the OSTC2 walks all over the Petrel.

Better screen, rechargeable battery, open algorithm.

Yes they would ;)

I stand corrected....To be fair, looks like the price has dropped significantly on the Petrel since I bought my OSTC!

Definitely puts it back into the mix!

So it appears each to their own. But I think we can agree they're both superb bits of kit, especially compared to my old VR's.

Nah, the OSTC is still much more beterer and coolerer than the Petrel ;)

Something that uses a decent deco algorithm?

Tables it is then if it's only about "need"

Probably more hours deco done on ye olde VR3 than any new gadgets with better (fashionable) algorithms.

If they don't bend you then who cares about how they do it?

I did many dives with a pair of VR3s (a pair corrects trim too ;) ) and look at me.... best not

you get told that by the VR3 if you ignore the silly deep stops (although still gives sensible stops you just lose the "man on the line")

I remember commenting to someone how I was sorted now as I had all the dive gear I would need. I am afraid to think about how many thousands I have "invested" on "life saving equipment" (that is the line I use on SWMBO whenever she criticises me buying new shineys) since then

They might not bend you, but you might get abandoned at 23m by your buddy on those joke deep stops.

Or fall asleep in the corner f the pub early.

The new gadgets are mostly using the same deco algorithms we were using with tables on trimix before the VR3s came out.

you can ignore the joke stops and it will still be useful. You can also plan the dive using Suunto Dive Manager (conservatisms set to P-2) and apart from the joke stops it will be good and do the gas plan for you :)

They lock out and give you "use tables" if you do that

yep, why not, does the job. I kept one of mine as backup until I bought the ostc (because I could hardly read the vr3 any more  )

I know Ross. What you posted is pretty much word for word what I got in a PM but someone claims you got the VR for free

which means my old Vr3 is sat on Paulo's arm during deco......

What's even more entertaining is two computers each running different deep stop algorithms...

With the VR3 I dived with someone using a Suunto and this ws amusing and we ended up doing more stops. I think his were shallower so he waited and then I waited... but we had nothing better to be doing really.

You play leapfrog coming up then sit out the Suunto minutes vowing to buy something decent instead.
