I know that it is very early doors but how do we get TDF higher up on Google's rankings?

I did a search for "the dive forum" and TDF came up 40th

Is there anything that we as individuals can do to try and push it up the engine's results?

Dont think it works that way, but then I know not alot about it.

Does having links to here from elsewhere help push it up?

If I tap in The Dive forum, it comes up at No3
If I tap in just Dive forum, it comes up at No 4 on page 3.

Pretty good for just over 24 hours.

BSAC on the first page!

Who'd have thunk it.

I reckon TDF will have top spot by end of Q1.

Google has many and complex 'rules' that are pretty much secret. However, there are a few general rules that help:

1. Good, fresh, content is king - keep posting good, relevant stuff.
2. Linking from Facebook, twitter and other social media is good - encourage your buddies - works far better than a search engine! Heck, even email the forum details to them if you like.
3. Linking from your web site if you have one. A link with relevant words in it like "excellent diving forum" or the like helps.

I have a notion (no evidence mind you) that the use of the F word and others may help shuffle us down the rankings.

To get a page 3 listing inside a few days is testament to what has been done by many of us already. More of the same will show results quickly.

I would suggest posting diving relevant threads. I'll definitely be posting a few more bits and bobs that i've got for the wreck research threads. Post some trip reports and make the content relevant and interesting then TDF will move up the rankings.

Adding linkd from personal / club websites is big help. If we all add links it will go up the rankings quickly.

Cross linking helps...ie a link in another site someone clicks on.....and choosing you metadata links carefully.....but SEO is a moving target

Okay, for the dumbasses (me) what are metadata links and SEO please?

Metadata is the keywords the site builder chooses to be associated with.

SEO = search engine optimisation

All about littering the website, links and associations with as many key words as possible.

The thing is though that there is a latency. You make a change, it'll take a couple of weeks to have an effect.

SEO and metadata links are things the user has limited control over....links....link backs and other. Things are your best bet....so twitter, Facebook, personal websites all help but you need critical mass...that takes time :)

Cross site links, content and *time* is needed. Google has to find the site, index the site and rank it.

GBDivers is only on there because its a paid advert.
It'll take a few weeks or months.

It is vital to attract fresh user that key words are linked to this site. It is no use being at the top when an user looks for the dive forum as a specific. What you want is to be near the top when an unkown searches 'diving forum' or 'diving'.

Deep linking or anchor linking to key words is a good way to do this. It will link chosen words to your site. i.e

The word diving (http://www.thediveforum.com) posted on another website or your website enough times in this way would drive you up the list of when people search for yorkshire divers. Hover your mouse over diving in that sentance and you will realise it is actually a link to here but invisible to moderators on commercial websites.

So each time you refer to a keyword by linking it to here you will slightly help rankings against that word. If you also link articles from this site on others it is always best to link it to keywords such as diving or the dive forum rather than 'link' or 'click here'
I used to sell content creation for new websites to build their communities at the begining. Thats not needed here as there will be steady traffic almost guaranteed providing you can keep the site active and online 24/7. I would also purchase the .net domain and .co.uk if this has not already been done to protect the brand.

That said This site will floorish naturlly looking with how much is here in such a short space of time.

Glad to be here at the start

I've just added a link to here on my website and also added a link into my signature. Both will help a little bit.

I get 7th for "the dive forum" and 40th for "diving forum"

Realistically if we cant get top spot when you own the .com name you seached for something aint right. But as said earlier itnis picking up all of he other searches that is key

The Dive Forum is too specific a reference to google. What you want is to get P1 for non specifics so for example diving forum brings us up on P4. I couldn't find us in the first 10 pages of sub aqua forum. Dive Forum brings us up on P3. Nothing on the first 10 pages of scuba forum.

What you're looking for is to try and get organic growth (ie people that don't know you exist and that are looking for a site that does what you do) Metatag keywords for us should include words like Forum Chat Scuba Sub-Aqua Sub Aqua Dive Diver Divers Diving Dived BSAC PADI NAUI etc

Over time the content will improve the google rankings as will links from places like Facebook, other websites etc. most changes take 2-3 weeks to have an effect. It's also worth registering the site with Google Analytics which will give you an overview of how people find and use the site so you can make tweaks. I am sure there is SEO software that does that for you but Analytics is free.

If the site had a physical address it might also be worth registering it with Google Places

These are all things I did when I set up my club website. Google Weymouth Diving and you'll see we feature as the third hit...much of that was through links in signatures of club members on diving fora

Other thing that will help will be click throughs from searches so if each person on here searches for something that might find the site and then goes through the pages and clicks on thediveforum link that'll help.

Have you looked into using Google Analytics to promote the forums, it's tailored to better your Google Search presence and give you excellent statistics for all the visitors to the site. :y:
