View Full Version : What Sorb ?

What sorb are you using and do you have a preference ?
I have been told that Dragersorb or Spherasorb is the best
for a good WOB. Having only dived my unit once I blagged
some Intersorb of a friend and thought it was fine but what
do I know ?
It's quite expensive to get it delivered to Northern Ireland so
I would rather get whatever people think is the best.

Is yours a kiss? They used to recommend the coarser stuff like sodasorb for WOB, but their duration testing was done with sofnolime which would have much better duration, but maybe doesn't breathe as well. I haven't noticed much difference in WOB between the two

I seem to recall there was faster breakthrough with the coarse stuff.

I always used 8-12 and never really noticed any WOB problems on my KISS.

Yes, Classic Kiss.

Tried some intersorb once, but it felt he same as sofnolime to me. It was large 5-8mm chunks and as I was unsure off the life I halved it then argued with the centre that I'd requested sofnolime so I wasn't prepared to pay sofnolime prices when something (possibly) inferior had been supplied :)

That's the same as the Intersorb I used and thought it was fine
but then I have nothing to compare it to.

I've used both. Divelime (spherasorb at £60 a tub delivered) it's larger size so has a easier WOB but breaks through faster and the AP sofnalime which is smaller but lasts longer (£70 delivered)
horses for courses.
depends on your useage.
I'm using AP sofnalime for 3 1hr dives to 20m ish, typical quarry diving. seal the can up afterwards and it's ok for me.
back to gordon hendersons rules on aliens from zorg.
use which ever you want, bin the fill just a freely. It's the difference between £6 or £7 a fill. (3hrs and I seem to remember 2.5hrs for the spherasorb)

if you want a comparison on breakthrough - rEvo has tested both in their units and publish both sets of figures (gives an idea of reduction in performance) yep, just checked it's on the .com site under downloads and I'd got the durations right. 2.5hrs for shperasorb and 3hrs for sofnalime.

I think you meant intersorb Barry; spherasorb has the smaller granule and is more expensive:

Order sodalime rebreather diving products from DIVELIME (http://www.divelime.com/dl_order.html)

Just ordered direct my second lot of interspherasorb. The first one from a dive shop was dustier than a desert storm. Hopefully a one off.

Actually, nope: I was right. :P
Spherasorb is bigger 2.5mm to 5.0mm and was £60 a tub when I brought it (it's gone up now)
Intersorb is in between 1.5mm to 2.5mm (and I've used that as well, just treat it the same as Spherasorb)
AP sofnalime 797 is 1.0mm to 2.5mm and is normally about £70 in shops (that's a good price on the site)

but the price range is still £60-70.

I think how and how far it's transported makes a huge difference. I used to buy Sofnolime from Divex and generally it would be very dusty, the stuff from the local shop (exactly the same) wasn't. I suspect the extra 400 miles of being rattled round a van made the difference.

I use Intersorb, first batch I had was very dusty, like you couldn't fill indoors without a mask type of dusty. Rest has been fine.

The tip I got, obviously really, if the batch is dusty is to fill outside (there's usually a breeze) and hold the container higher than normal to allow the dust to blow off when poured.

Started using a butchered ap scrim in the top of my scrubber

Don't like dust !

Once the unit is assembled I used to removed the inhale fitting from the scrubber head and hoof a few strong breathes through... White dust used to fly out the inhale turret

Didn't like the thought of it in my lungs...

and don't forget to vacuum clean the scrubber ;)

I used Sperasorb.

Longest i pushed the scrubber was six hours diving warm and shalow. Cold and UK i ran four hours a few times on 70-85m dives.

I liked Sperasorb and with a combination of a new BOV Cooper hoses and Sperasorb, i found no issue with the WOB.

Biggist thing for WOB issues on the KISS was the BOV. Getting rid of the old Paragon and replaceing it with Thechme was litraly a breath of fresh air

I have just ordered Spherasorb so I will see. As I said I did have a fill of Intersorb
and had no problems with the WOB but it was at 10m max. My unit has a non shrimp
Golem Gear BOV fitted if that helped.

I've used intersorb at 70m with no wob problems, but helium helps that as well. Of the two, I go for intersorb's extra duration and dive recommended fill times to give conservatism.

I would as well. The KISS scrubber isn't the most resilient or water tolerant, I wouldn't fanny around with it.

Like I said earlier I never noticed the WOB ever being an issue even at depth. You can make it better but that doesn't make it poor to start with. It's just not as good as some.

I'm on my 2nd tub of intersorb ATM. No issues and I get 3.5-4 hours before I need to cycle the scrubber on the rEvo. All dives between 30-55m. The rMS seems to be tracking the use very nicely.
