I have not been able to fully inspect my new acquisition, to check what exactly I need to replace but there are some obvious bits to consider and wondered if anyone could help with some questions that are arising:

Batteries: given that I am on Gen 1 black handsets I think I need 12v batteries?

ADV diaphragm: Have these improved I have read some horror stories as I trawl through here and RBW historic posts? Is the John Falcone hockey puck still available at all I can't find anything online about it anymore. Do I get another stem? Capt Morgan I believe you made your own, did you just use the original as a template and how did you know what silicone to order?

BOV Mushroom valves: N90 have some listed but I am not sure if they will fit the Sherwood BOV on my unit, if not can I get them from anywhere else?

MAV (Gen 1): I haven't checked yet but don't know if this has had the deeper orifice fitted or the reversed (?) spring. If not are these available anywhere, Kim has said they don't have them.

IP Gauge (to test flow rate against reg IP): N90 list 4 options, is there a particular one, thread size I will need and do they come O2 clean?

Cells: I need 3 to get stared but how many do people keep in stock for failures?

Jesus............it's almost like I know what I am talking about, which I definitely don't. Some learning curve this, wait til I have to dive the bloody thing.

Batteries: If they're the non backlit, A23 batteries (12v)


ADV diaphragm: I put ~2000 hours on my diaphragm before I swapped it. What kills them is a long hard negative. ask yourself what failure mode you're identifying with that test... then ask if you need to do it.

BOV Mushroom valves: They're an interspiro part. I'd have to check the exact part number.

MAV (Gen 1): pretty sure i have both the spring and the orifice, but lifes busy and i keep forgetting to check.....

IP Gauge (to test flow rate against reg IP): If you mean an interstage pressure guage, you just want a standard one for regs. peter built do a nice one. If you mean the flow meter, I never bothered. You set the unit up while at rest.... adjust IP so O2 doesnt rise. All i did after this was to time the drop from 200 to 100 bar. thats yourbaseline and now you can do field checks with just a timer.

Cells: Opinions vary. I kept one in the toolbox, when it got used I bought another. That way Im not sitting with 3 from the same batch (could be a common problem with them), or ageing 3 at once. Best practise is to do a rolling replacement one at a time anyway

Honestly, the beauty of the kiss is its simplicity. Divers seem to like to make things more complicated than they need to be...

Spares wise i used to carry a full set of o rings, a spare MAV (easy to field swap), a spare ADV wobble valve, a spare display, a spare diaphragm and a spare draw nut. My ethos was always to fix things the easiest way possible.

In reality i ended up swapping out a display once, the flapper valves a few times and a lot of batteries and cells. All those swap outs where caught on the night before during assembly/test. I was never a fan of getting surprised by faults as a result of not doing tests until just before the dive.

Looking at the ADV diaphragm on the narked site it is a different colour to the original that I had
though I did replace it with one cut from 1mm silicone sheet ordered from ebay and cut to size
with the use of a sort of compass with a blade and punched the holes to line up with the cover,
sounds more complicated than it actually is.
Most of the problems with the diaphragm is caused by holding the neg test for a prolonged time,
the silicone seems to be more forgiving but I still don't hold the neg for to long.
I have a GG BOV so have no idea about the Sherwood Mushroom valves so can't help with that.
The IP gauge I use has a fitting to fit a BCD hose so I fit a hose when I want to set the IP.
More important to me is a good flow gauge that actually tells you the O2 flow, a different orifice
size will have a different flow at the same pressure.
I use Narked cells and am happy enough with them though I change one cell every four months.

Never owned a flow gauge? Couldent see the point when I could test the flow sitting on my sofa :D
