Hi,

I'm looking at flights to Malta late October\November, not weighed my gear yet but would have thought I would be in excess of the 20KG free allowance (full backplate BCD for starters!), so I was looking at the Sport Equipment add-ons, £26 each way for 'Diving Gear', which is in addition to the 20KG.......................but, on their Info page it states


Travel light. Enjoy no extra fees.

If you’re not carrying any checked-in luggage to your destination, simply check-in online, drop off your sports equipment for free, and power through to your flight.

Now I always pack light on clothes etc anyway, so I could carry on with clothes and take on 32KG worth of diving gear as sports equipment for free as long as I don't check in another bag??? I can always hide some clothes in there if needs be! Anyone tried the above?

now if this is what it says then its worth investigating some more, i am going in november with my one so in theory she can book my 32k in for free and i pay for my baggage.

I've never known them check what is in a "sports" bag. I once flew out here with 5 bags of "kit" no problem.

Essentially it is true but no one bag can exceed 23kgs - we had to pay for "extra" to get our sports equipment on. Still had to juggle the contents of the bags though.

Last month I travelled with Air Malta. I booked a 32kg sports package and had the usual 10 kg hand luggage. After weighing the rest of my dive gear I decided to increase the standard 20kg allowance to 32kg. Both the crate and dive bag, each weighing 32kg, had to be taken to the heavy bags section.

Plus always have a printed copy or access to your email confirmation to show check in staff what you have paid for.

Cos if you have to pay again there is no way of getting it back apparently...

I was on the same flight as Trigger with a similar experience. I only had to show I'd booked extra luggage at Manchester; the guy at Malta didn't seem to care.

Done this trip a few times. I normally book a 32kg dive bag via the sports equipment online booking options its £26 each way, getting a confirmation number with your on line booking, keep this number I personal put it in my on line diary along with the booking reference. You will need this number not necessarily the actual booking but the number. I have been asked for this verification number but not every time. Better looking at it than for it.
I guess you could put what you want into any of the bags, (carry on 10kg hold bag 20kg, dive bag 32kg) as long as you don’t exceed the designated allowance if that’s your “bag” so to speak
I normally get the Friday evening flight out of Manchester Terminal 2. There are usually only two flights out of Terminal two on a Friday evening Malta and Islamabad, the place is a ghost town while you may get a beer there is not a lot selection on the culinary front.
Have you checked with your dive outfit I know some dive centres were offering a 10% flight discount earlier this year in conjunction with AM
IMHO Air Malta does what it says on the can, it may be possible to get a cheaper flight from Easy Jet 2. com if you are prepared to fly on a wet Tuesday afternoon that has an R in the month with pensioners discount rate having met all the small print terms and conditions. Air Malta is dive friendly you pay your flight, your dive bag supplement of 26 quid and that’s it.
