Have just finished reading this by Dr Mel Clarke. Excellent, very well written, factual, to the point and she even agrees with me on the use of yellow DSMB's with a slate attached in emergencies. Bonus ;)

very. although perversely it's then got the usual confusing and over complex yank maths in it. It's also a bit DIR telling you what kit you should be using instead of the more accurate and pragmatic advice 'use whatever kit works for you'. oops i can feel the wrath of DIR already for that one

Forty quid but only book needed for coming course so material costs deducted from course price.

Mike,
Well it is a "Yank" book, so the maths thing is inevitable :)
I've got it and didn't think it was DIResque, however the DIR guys won't descend in wrath as they're too busy laughing at as CCR loonies :)

The equipment section could be seen as a bit mandatory in tone but no big deal and the calcs are a bit yawn but after the first read, it's a great aide memoire imo as it's well laid out and the information is easy to digest.

I'm gonna spoil this party by telling everyone that it's a complete waste of money. All smoke & mirrors with pretty colour photos and no real content.
The sorry saga continues with the trimix follow-up. Even less value for money, if that's possible.
Criticising this pile of crap got me my first red from Linda Bowen on Burger World, so it's not all bad ;)

However, if you've read the first book, you ought to know what this one's gonna be like.

Once again - utter shite!

Lol, when all you've had previously is the IANTD ccr manual to compare it against, it's a work of art.

This to me, is a no brainer - how do surface support know what you problem is?? - glad that someone is putting this into writing.

I just felt sorry for the brand new slate I cut up to fit with the SMB!

Need to wait till Monday and go to the sorting office...lucky I work on the same peripheral trading estate as the sorting office or I would have a right old trek

I've spoke to a few skippers about this. The best answer I've heard from one of them to a diver asking: "do you want me to put a yellow bag up if I am in trouble?" is, "what do you want me to do?".

So my question - what do you want to happen when you put up your yellow bag?

Matt.

BTW - I have one too, never used it, it's sort-of brown now.

Have to agree, I bought CCR simplified before before embarking down the breaver route. Didn't learn a great deal and it is very expensive for the content you get. Take the pictures and you're left with £9.99 quick read book.

Luckily I got the book on deal and managed to sell it on for only a £5 less than I paid for it!

Depends who you listen to or what you read...It's not, so long as you stick to recognized practices, nor does the literature need to be...this book for mod 2 was a breath of fresh air compared to the iantd manual for mod 1, though I'd still like the psai mixed gas manual for further reading.

Just out of interest, what changes did you make?

I cut my ppO2 back after suffering pulmonary symptoms and have felt the better for it. I take it from what you've said above that it was more to do with practices than a problem with the unit?

id say fair play to him , for looking at what he had been doing and then changing what ever he felt need to be changed ,
also taking on more training that he may have seen as a help, to him self ,

1.2-1.3'ish for a week, 2'ish hour dives every day, sometimes twice a day. Not deep dives but long dives. I had wheezy chest/sore throat, felt like I was getting a cold. It was similar to the feeling I had in the pot.

iv done a J and a half in over a weeks diving in norway and been fine 1.4 bottom and 1.6 /1.5 deco oc
i tend to get a bit horsey by the end of the week tho , if im on 50% or more helium, ccr

Yep.
As a "hayfever induced asthmatic" I'm very aware of the effects of high ppo2 on lung function.
1.6 on OC does have a huge effect over 1.3 breather. I try to run all dives on 1.2 max and after a week at malin felt ok, so 1.3 is a max for me (my body says no above that)
Those days when I used to crank the deco to 1.5/6 aren't worth the days of coughing to follow and that was OC

Is it fair to say that the dil had little to do with this? and it is the prolonged exposure to O2 and that the same could happen on long, repetitive air dil dives to 30M.

That's either arrogant bollocks or you're suffering from the above.

Not bollocks or the above thing..... just an honest opinion (we are allowed these aren't we, it is a forum?)

So OK why is CCR Trimix diving harder than OC in your opinion?

I dived RMS Egypt in 122m off France on CCR, it was relatively simple to plan & execute. It's been done on OC with twin 18's & big stages. Assuming I had the cylinders & could stand up with them on, it would have been well beyond my capability. On CCR it was swim down, swim around & come up, just a long run-time to contend with & 90 mins deco at 6m. Not that different from a 50m dive in all honesty, apart from the amount of deco & that's more a psychological issue.

Did 100m OC Trimix dive in Egypt, that was bad enough for me!!

matt

80m OC was my limit, deeper is nuts.

I also think keeping it simple is good advice.
