For those who haven't yet upgraded to Windows 10, but who have dive computers which download by IR, be warned.

Details here (http://borncity.com/win/2015/09/02/windows-10-infrared-irda-stack-is-removed/).

I barely understand what is being discussed, but it appears that support for infrared devices has been removed from Windows 10.

We discovered this today when unable to download my wife's Aladin 2G to her computer (which has upgraded), while I'm (fortunately) still waiting for my upgrade invitation.

If anyone knows a (simple) method of making IrDA work with Win 10, do let me know.
(By simple, I don't mean setting up a "virtual machine" to run Windows 7 or 8)

What type of Infra-red device do you have on the PC?

If it is integrated, did you try this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/enable-an-infrared-connection

Matt.

SigmaTel USB IrDA dongle.

In any case, your link was to a solution Vista. With Win 10, the computer recognises that the dongle is plugged in. It goes off, downloads and installs the driver, but throws an error message (variously Code 1 and Code 31). Have tried disabling and re-enabling the driver.

Then Googled it and found the page I linked to previously.

Bloody Microsoft...

I see lots of people complaining the same. Would be interesting to know if it would even work in a Win7/8 VM.

Windows 10 does have HyperV manager so if you have the media you could try for free at least.

Good luck, I've not used Ir for 10 or more years.

I contacted Scubapro a week ago about this.

Reply as followes

Dear Kato

Thank you for your e-mail.

Unfortunately Microsoft deleted the infrared plug-in from Windows 10. Our software engineers are now developing a new plug-in/driver for windows 10. As soon as the driver is available you can download it from our homepage.

Allegedly as of April 2016 (Win10 ver 1511) IrDA should be working again. There is a thread about this issue on scubaboard (http://www.scubaboard.com/community/threads/irda-driver-for-windows-10.511628/).

I have not managed to get it going yet even thought I have the required windows update and did the microsoft recommended steps (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3150989). I'll fiddle with it a bit more but if it doesn't work out I will probably try the VM approach.

Update from Scubapro (19/05/2016):

We are still waiting for the release from Microsoft. We don´t know exactly when they will release the update that includes the infrared drivers.
The only thing you can do now is:
For Windows 10 and infrared, we have the current situation:
Unfortunately, Microsoft deleted the infrared plug-in on Windows 10. Our software engineers are developing a new driver / plug-in for Windows 10. We don´t have a release date now. As soon as the driver is available, you can download it free on our homepage.
In the meantime, you can use a program called "virtual box". This program simulate an older Windows version on your PC.

They also provided brief how to instruction. If anyone interested in the VM pm me and I can forward the email with attachments.

An update on this: infrared functionality has been restored in the current version of Win10. I'm now able to download my Uwatec Tek2G using the same cheap-bought-from-eBay 3rd party USB-to-IrDA dongle which I used previously.

All is well with my geekery...
