Blue Whale Sighting in UK Waters

Great news that a blue whale has been spotted off the coast of Cornwall, the first ever seen in UK waters.

I was excited enough to see a whale shark last week on the way to a dive site, but a blue whale......Hopefully it's an indication that the blue whale population is indeed recovering :-)

Looking at the map though, the area it was spotted in looks more like the Atlantic. So how far do "UK Waters" extend then? I might be just being pedantic but 250 miles from the UK coast doesn't really feel like "UK waters".....

12 miles is the general rule... beyond that is international waters....

Isn't there an exclusion zone covering 200 miles from centre of UK, anyone coming into this zone can be attacked by nuclear submarines (SSN) ?

      Memento mori.

So 250 miles off the coast seems a bit of a stretch to call the area "UK Waters" then :-)

Rockall is a disputed rock. Several countries have a claim to it
If my post doesnt have a typo, then I have probably been hacked!

That maybe what we claim, however, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) states territorial waters to be a belt of coastal waters extending no more than 12 nautical miles from the low water mark.

I'm surprised that N. Ireland and the Channel Islands are no longer part of the UK

The Channel islands are British Crown dependencies and not part of the UK.
