......... not sure IF i really want to if im being honest...

For 99% of my dives, i have absolutly no need for it, and the data it has for my neck of the woods, is not that great.

Plus, when i found out that they now have all the UKHO's wrecks database, and are now one of the select "custodians" of their database, it made me even more ummmm reluctant.... see below email recieved from the UKHO. The information i requested, used to be free... so i feel a bit begrudging to pay out now...

"Dear Neil,

Thank you for your enquiry.

With effect from 13 Dec we have been unable to provide a Wreck Information Service and users are advised to use alternative sources. In line with government policy, UKHO grants permission to 3rd parties to re-use the data contained in its Wrecks Database and therefore enquirers are requested to make use of one of a number of 3rd party web based services. Typing “UKHO wrecks” into a search engine will show alternative sources for wrecks information.
Sources Of Wrecks Information:

DEFRA - INSPIRE portal
Defra, UK - UK Location » INSPIRE (http://location.defra.gov.uk/inspire/)

SeaZone – HydroSpatial Content
SeaZone Solutions - Marine Geographic Information Solutions from Instrument to Desktop (http://www.seazone.com/hydrospatial.php)

WRACK WRECK WRAK EPAVE PECIO (http://www.Wrecksite.Eu)

Global Maritime Wrecks Database
Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) (http://gcmd.nasa.gov) Search for 'Wrecks'

Historic Scotland - Looking after our heritage - Historic Marine Protected Areas (http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/wrecksites)

I hope you find this information of use but please do not hesitate to contact us again should you require further assistance at any time.

Kind regards

I'm not sure grants permission is telling the whole story...perhaps grants permission once the license fee has been paid is closer to the truth?

It strikes me that this government is being particularly aggressive when it comes to protecting their own intellectual property, and equally aggressive at weakening the rights of the likes of you and me so third parties can make money from someone else's property.

All in the name of 'growth'.

Because 'We are all in it together'.

Apparently.

This reminds me of the Open Street Map project. Ordnance Survey data (paid for by the UK taxpayer) is expensive to get hold of. So individuals (many hundreds? including me) uploaded their GPS tracks to a webserver and made their own map. Quite a mature project now, it has most of the planet mapped and the data is used by many other applications, including GPS and SatNav apps.
OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/)

Isn't there a website somewhere where individuals can contribute GPS data for dive sites where it is all then available on an open licence..?

(My guess is that there already is... but I've never had the need to seek it out.)

Yep, server hosting isn't free either even IF they were getting the info free of charge.

Last time i renewed my membership it was something like £25 for a year. £2 a month for all that data isn't breaking the bank. I use it regulalry for all sorts of info on my local area.

Ditto. There are good guys and bad guys in the world. Some companies who you'd have to chisel the money out of my cold dead hands before I'd give them a penny. (I'm talking about you O2 broadband) and there are others where I'm pleased that it exists and happy to support it.

Wrecksite.eu is definitely in the latter category.

I'd have looked a couple up, but that quite a long list. It's cheaper than a fill of mix or a day on the boat to join.

This sickens the hell out of me. Tax payers fund the survey work, and then It belongs to who? Not the tax payer? Get the info back from the toffs and spread it about.. same with the tidal constants.

The majority of the work on Wrecksite was done by individuals - there's effectively a link to the hydro report. A lot of the hydro marks are inaccurate and don't identify the wrecks except where people have provided the info. Wrecksite is a great resource but will go the way of SWM if not supported.

That reminds me I've got to update the details on the mark labeled Antwerpen (it's a trawler turned turtle) and add a video to one of the unknowns.

I'm even thinking of splashing out on a subscription to the newspaper archive so I can find out more about some of the wrecks I dive from comtempory news.

Isn't what you are asking for in effect theft ? Also conspiracy to commit a crime ?

Asking a friend who subscribes to something to use their paid subscription and share the info with you is theft now ?

[EDIT - only just noticed how old this thread is !! ]

Old thread but still relevant.

Wrecksite is a great resource that puts all the information in one place. Without something like this we'd go back to the good old days when only the skippers knew where the wrecks were and the histories of the ships were only known by the few that put the effort in to research them. It's even more useful since they got the licence to use the UKHO reports.
It's even more useful if you want to dive anything other that the usual "tick in the box" tourist wrecks...

99.9% of tax payers won't use this information and would more than likely be peeved that "their" money is being used to fund this. Charge the ones who want the info and the money goes back into the coffers. . . . .

Then you need to do a reality check and examine the facts and then relax

The tax payer may have funded the original works but it costs money to gather and publish the information.

Nope I stand by the sentiment, a public body judged that the work was worthwhile carrying out, once the information has been collected there is no cost to distribution, "here pull a few lines of text off my website".Where's the cost? Probably could make money in advertising.

My problem is with the ownership of the information. Same thing happened with the tidal constants data. FYI USA, France etc all have released the equivalent data to the public domain. Which is where this belongs.

And no wine, maybe a little insomnia. Now when I drink whisky, then I rant.

I've got to say that since the data has been collected at tax payer expense, i see no reason why it shouldnt be made available both for joe average (free of charge basic service) and via license to commercial entities where its used for gain (they can enhance the presentation/tie it up into a complete service).

Wrecksite is a nice example of a good use of the data and its enhanced by additional content, for a very reasonable fee.
