View Full Version : Posting an image to TDF - Basic How To Guide

GLOC

When we set the forum we decided that as there are plenty of options to host images so that they are in your control and not TDF's we removed the option to upload to the TDF server.

Options include Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, Tinypics, even Dropbox. If you don't have Dropbox, here is a referral link (http://db.tt/FnV9q8w) which means we both get an additional 500Mb of Dropbox storage space for free.

The URL needs to be pasted into the text box when you select the picture frame icon above.

Facebook:

Upload the image to Facebook. Navigate to the album, select the photo. Right click on the image and select the URL of the image you want. Paste it into the URL text box.

Flickr:

Upload the image, navigate to the image. Select the dropdown 'Share', Tick "Grab the HTML/BBCode", select BBCode, copy and paste the BBCode into your text, delete everything apart from http://farm8....jpg, recopy that text and paste it into the URL text box

I have not used Photobucket so can't comment, but presume the technique is broadly the same.

Dropbox:

Copy the image (of size approx 600-800 pixels across) into the 'Public' folder of Dropbox and then right click on the image in Explorer or Finder and select Dropbox>>Copy Public Link from the menu option and then paste that into the URL space above.

If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

The facebook one is incomplete:

Right click desired photo, choose properties and copy url from there - once in TDF choose "insert image" and copy url unto box.

Not in FireFox :)

Right click the image and on the drop down menu you will see "Copy Image Location".

fairly standard to just link to piccies Eddie. this keeps prices down amongst the other benefits of you maintaining some image control

No, it's the first thing GLOC mentioned in his post ;)

Basically, it keeps server costs down by not hosting 1000s of images
After the debacle of 'the other place' a lot of people decided they didn't want their images available for VS to do what they like with. A hosted image couldn't be deleted as they locked the ability to edit threads. A linked image was easy to break the link on.

Get a photobucket account, very easy to use. You can also link direct from Facebook, and others.

Put the image in the Public folder of Dropbox, then right click and there should be something likes 'Copy Public Link', and the post that into the bit where it asks for a URL.

Right click on the actual image, (if in Firefox you can directly copy the image location, if in IE you need to cut and paste it from the properties window.

I can't get dropbox to work with an jpg file. I don't have a public folder and when I click to generate the URL I get an https: type URL. It works as a link but not as an img. Is it the https: that is stopping it working?

Link-https://www.dropbox.com/sc/5c1k18sjms5o1x4/AAC7OPYKiVdQo8b51BvtDkWZa

I'm on the free version of Dropbox.Just create a 'Public' folder if you don't have one. It should automatically have the correct attributes.

I use the Dropbox app on my Mac, I assume there's one for Windows too. Then you can manage your Dropbox content from Finder (or Explorer).

Here's a chicken:

Just click on 'Copy Public Link'

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4996887/Screenshot%202015-02-05%2012.59.35.png
and the correct URL will be magically placed in your clipboard. Then just click on the little 'Photo' icon

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4996887/Screenshot%202015-02-05%2013.04.45.png

when you want to place the image into a post and Cmd-V the url into the box or just DIY it by placing it between 'IMG' tags

So do I need a Public folder? I'm not going to pay 8 per month just to do that.

Dropbox says I shouldn't need one but the URLs I end up with look like "https://www.dropbox.com/s/v1i7eqxcwf4y040/stupid.jpg?dl=0".

Link - https://www.dropbox.com/s/v1i7eqxcwf4y040/stupid.jpg?dl=0

So do I need a Public folder? No, one can share from any folder now.

The 'Share' button just seems to give a link to the file to view online though. If you download the desktop app, it's a lot easier to do what I've done above.

Having checked, it seems to do the same thing from within the app too. One gets the option to 'Share Dropbox Link' rather than 'Copy Public Link'.

I'll investigate further, but I just created a 'Public' folder from within the desktop app. I did have the account prior to the new system being invoked though

I have just 'Shared Dropbox Link' for the post above and the image isn't displayed but if you open the link in a new page, then the image is displayed.

Must be to stop people doing what we're trying to do ;)

Because Dropbox will be tracking how the link is created and if it comes from within IMG it won't be displayed, but if you open the image directly within a browser it is fine.

But if you open that link in another window/tab, then right click the image and 'copy image url' and paste that here, you get:

So why does it work from a link but not as an img?The link is to a page that has the image embedded rather than a link to the image itself.

This (https://www.dropbox.com/s/89s92j1q51eovor/2015-01-13%2016.42.34.jpg?dl=0) is what I get when I click ’Share Dropbox Link’ from a different folder:

I tried dropping off the "?dl=0" earlier but it made no difference. That's not the only difference in the construction of the URL. It's just a query string, in this case an instruction not to download the image. If you swap the zero for a '1' the file will be downloaded to your computer.

Dropbox has recently changed the way they handle images

The share public link is to an image viewer which then displays the image, rather than a link directly to the image file. This is why the link works in a browser but does not work properly in IMG tags.

There is a workaround, let me do some research to remind myself.

How so ? With the right URL it serves up the image just the same ... Agree maybe forming the URL is a bit more complex than just cut and paste. And it has to be in an accessible folder. But if you already have Dropbox then seems to work fine.

I've always used photo9 bucket but guessing this isn't going to work going forward :( Picked this up from the boating world.

Recently the image hosting service Photobucket changed their terms of use for account holders and no longer allow embedded images to be displayed on forums. As a result the forum had many threads lose their photo documentation.

Wow. Yes - all my posts with their images are broken.

I moved to postimage.org for new stuff sometime ago, but left their hosting so nothing broke. Time to close the account.

postimage.org is very easy to use.

Matt.

Now that I can't use photobucket I cross post from Facebook mostly these days but have also used dropbox or my own website.

Ho hum......looks as though I need a new alternative to photo bucket for my irregular form photo postings... ☹️

Any idea why photobucket did this? Limiting their liabilities?

Most likely they realised that few of their customers outside of the US used their printing, etc services and they realised the cost of hosting everyone's images for no gain was a poor idea.

I deleted all my images as I could not be bothered to check their new T&Cs. How do you close the account? I couldn't work out how. It was difficult enough deleting images.

I believe I have done it thanks all. I think it takes time after delete cos I can still log on. Will wait 24 hrs.

I'm puzzled by the recent comments here as this picture from Photobucket, of a recent dive buddy enjoying his deco cider, seems to display fine

in the last few weeks. The pictures in this thread, from last year, also seem to be visible Malin 2016 (https://www.thediveforum.com/showthread.php?20489-Diving-in-Ireland)

Oddly enough I've just posted in the photo link game using one.

My delete of my account seems to take about 3 days. So they say I guess they keep hoping I might change my mind. No Chance.

They're not :(

Indeed. I got the email yesterday and today they disabled it. I guess rather than being overwhelmed with orders they decided to piss everyone off gradually.

At $39.99 they are nearly twice the price of the comparable service from Flickr, which costs $44.95 per 2 years. I suspect they are relying on people being unable, or unwilling, to edit their posts on forums etc.

VGY seems a good alternative to Photobucket so far. Free, simple interface and no bullsh*t.

I tried to download the albums today - but that feature seems broken now; Lucky I download onto another laptop earlier in the year.

After I fix my article here and on CCRX I will close the account.

They've been shite for years anyhow.

Matt.
