View Full Version : Rotating first stages

With a twin set do you swap the 1st stages around? obviously the main first stage is constantly used with the back up only ever breathed on pre dive check and the occasional drill. In real term use my first stages end up with 1 getting approx 100hrs use a year and the other lucky to see an hour. Even my deco 1st stages get more use. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a lot of faff for no good reason IMHO. You are wetting the stage as often as the main one, so it needs as much cleaning as the primary. Depending on your views about servicing you might extend the service interval for longer on the back up, but I'm sure there will be mixed views on that ;)

time is as big an issue as use ,, many things are worse for not being used ,
rubber still rots flaps seize ,,, etc , or so im told.

I have a pile of regs and it seems that the ones I use all the time have less issues. Maybe worth a try. It's easy enough.

Nope, another not even thought about it till now.
I can see a (slight) argument in favour of swapping them round due to wear of the moving parts, but to be totally honest with you, if they are serviced by a decent technician, with appropriate lubrication, then you would be hard pressed to "wear out" any moving parts that aren't replaced during a routing service anyway.....

I've never heard of anyone doing it.

Dive Indy twins - not an issue :)

Thinking about this right now I reckon you've more chance cross threading something switching them over than you have of saving yourself a failure.
I've never considered it before.

I tend to think moving the parts is better for them than letting them sit unused

At the minute, my left hand regs are moved over to my singles rig for teaching, so they probably get similar wear levels.
I can't see that it matters though, I wouldn't plan to swap them, and I won't once I buy another set of regs.

I couldn't, my 1st stages are different and wouldn't route properly if swapped over.

As with many of the others, never thought about it much, every now and again I use the left hand post, just so it feels wanted

When I had Xtreams on my twins.... Sometimes, very rarely... I'd get a slight bubble on my backup... I'd just swap the 2nd stages over and use the bubbly one. they don't like to be dry for to long. One dive and it would be back to normal....

As in, the backup second stage would bleed gently?

I've never thought about it before.
However, your back-up 1st stage will be used, if only for the wing or the drysuit, which will be enough to keep it moving slightly.

More of an occasional bubble under my chin...maybe dust.. maybe salt... Like I said, wet and used for a dive and it was back to its fantastic normal self.

Not if you run your wing off your primary (all primary on one side, all backup on the other) and your drysuit runs off a suit inflate bottle.
Which is my (twinset rig) set up. Though to be fair the backup side does get a tiny bit of use in that I breath the reg on the surface during my pre-dive check and I also give it a couple of breaths at the bottom of the shot after doing a flow check.

Only time my back up reg gets used is during shut down drills

Which tells us how often you practice out of gas drills then :)

Ya it gets about 30 seconds of use per dive :D

i dont swap them as a rule, however sometimes i need to swap the FSRs back to single config with short hoses for the wife / daughter, when that happens sometimes they go back on the other way round !
Think about the TEK3s - they are designed to be one way round. I never swap these.

Can't say it's something I think about too often, although I did notice a distinct difference in the breathe on my primary vs backup reg last week..

I don't dive twins, but wouldn't have thought it's worth the faff. However I've seen the guys that I dive with who use twins breathe off the second reg for a minute or two on the bottom just to confirm it's playing, before continuing the dive.

interesting . Right homework everyone next time weather permits a dive comparison results please.
Mine breathe totally differently.
Not exactly surprising given that one is an apex DST/tx40 and the other one is a sherwood 1st and a (rough as f***) r390 second...

I use apeks tek3 and these are handed left and right but I alway do a shut down drill as part of any dive so the left one does get used:)

No, but I do occasionally breath my backup with my primary in hand during dives. My reasoning being two fold, I want to know that it is working comfortably for if I ever have to use it an anger, and two, I paid for it, I want some use from it
