View Full Version : Block introductions sub forum on TAT

I don't want to sound like a curmudgeon but is there any way to block the intros sub forum from showing up in new posts on TAT it's just with everyone moving over, means that everyone seems to feel the need to introduce themselves to (largely) the same group of people that already know them and its swamping real content, not really being helped by some users copy and pasting the same welcome message to every thread on there either.

Know what you mean, you get the intro then the 'Welcome blah blah...' messages (particularly from one person that copies/pastes the same sentiment to all newcomers!)

...not really being helped by some users copy and pasting the same welcome message to every thread on there either.I think a few people are desperate to get their post rate up without having to go to the effort of thinking-up any actual content - we all know who they are.

To play devil's advocate, isn't the point of the intros subforum so that existing members get the chance to read the introduction and welcome the new user should they so choose? If we all ignored the intro subforum, it might make the place seem quite unfriendly?

If we all ignored the intro subforum, it might make the place seem quite unfriendly?I think what Elvis is saying is that there's no real need to keep welcoming people you were conversing with elsewhere only a week before. The reason I didn't bother posting an introduction is that I didn't want to add to the noise.

Oh, that makes sense. But when do you then "unblock" the subforum so you get to see "new users" who weren't in the other place? I must admit I did add an intro of my own, kept it short n sweet though, but at the time there weren't a huge number of people here. I don't think I've replied to any intros as yet. The other thing is I don't use the New post functionality either, I just browse and subscribe if something takes my fancy.

Yes Elvis - the best possible way to block the intro section is to ignore it. i.e. don't click it.
Miserable git. :)

Agree with Diving Dude (HOW did that happen?!?) and Malcolm...I like the intro's - always good reading how people introduce themselves

TBH the intros themselves are less of the problem it's more the cut and paste responses, although they do seem to have died down recently.

When I joined here I did not get a Hi!! I appreciated that it was a brand new site and forgot about it soon enough.
People who join new forums who are not engaged in the first couple of posts seldom stick around for long. It is not your duty to make a connection with everyone in the introductions forum but thanks for the few who will go on and say hi even if it's a tad generic. The more personalities we get here the better. Putting people off from acknowledging a potentially new member that has never joined any forum before is not the way to grow a community.
You will find that members who have a zero reply to their introduction with little or no posts to their handle for the majority

Well that only needed 40 odd posts, well until the next person says "just don't click on that forum" without actually reading the rest of the thread (or even the OP! ) I guess, for my next trick ill be painting the forth bridge.
