View Full Version : Curry Bible potential

Hey all,
Just a quick question. I know a lot of you have already downloaded the digi copies of the Curry Bible, and some may have even printed it out to hard copy. However, should the curry bible version 2.0 (big changes) be printed professionally and "published" would you buy a copy, if any and all profits were donated to the RNLI? As I've said in the past, I didn't produce the curry bible in order to make money, I did it because I like it and think others might like it too, however, if there is the potential to use it as a fund raising tool to make a few quid for the RNLI, or other "dive" related charity, then that's great. But I don't want to go spending a fortune on publishing etc for every one to go "Nah you're ok, already go it" and then end up out of pocket.
Thanks
*EDIT* Obviously a hard copy would include a lot more info than the bible does at present, and photographs showing each stage of cooking etc.

With good photos, nice clear layout, a bit of interesting stuff (e.g. a quick paragraph or couple of lines about the curries, where (and maybe 'what') the originated from, useful tips and assides), and a nice sized format, coming in at the £20 mark (a typical sort of price for this kind of thing - have a look at Antonio Carrluccio's 'Collection' for a basic idea of what I'm getting at, which comes in at £25) - then you can put me down for a copy.

Also, if anyone has any experience in how to get something like this produced I'd be very grateful for any pointers. Do I just get a graphic design company to produce it for me and then head to a printers to have it churned out? or is there some black magic involved?

Put it this way, get a price, if its reasonable then i'm happy to pay upfront :)
For reference, home made / custom cook books are traditional gifts here in Germany for weddings.
unserGeschenkbuch.de (http://www.unsergeschenkbuch.de/)
Going rate for one of these is 10€ plus postage etc....
But more exy if you get them from the states...
Custom Cookbooks by Jeri turns your family's favorite recipes into a treasured f (http://www.customcookbooks.net/)
that aside, this might be a good way for you to do this. Gets the organising out of your hands, and in to someone elses!!?

If youre going to donate to a charity might be worthwhile getting in touch with them as they may have experience of doing similar?

Good point.
I would go down the ebook route. Much cheaper to get it into virtual print than self publishing.
Far less risk to you in being out of pocket.
Now people are using tablets so the photos can be in colour.

I know people who have self published.
It aint cheap.
If you are getting into photographs and profesional page layups, the costs are heading one way only.
E book format would get my vote as well.

Ootini - I much prefer a physical "thing" and you can get very short print runs now thanks to "straight to plate" printing presses, so you could almost do a short run and order up a new batch every quarter say (save you having a room taken over by books).
The DTP costs (text creation, editing, proof reading, layout, image creation, retouching etc) will be the same whether you go electronic or print. With print it's not so easy for people to email a copy to each other. You can make Apps with App Studio for Quark Express (DTP program) so less easy to mail around than a PDF.
Although only Monday AM...I now *really* need a curry...
Dave, take a look at lulu. It's not ideal, but probably suits low volume/startup stuff.

Why not do it as a kickstarter? Then you can be sure of getting the cash up front (an easy stretch goal or higher level goal would be hard copy version)

It took me by surprise too, I'll check Indiegogo, thanks.
I would be in for a copy but can the money go somewhere other than the RNLI, there are many deserving causes and the lifeboat fund is heavily cash rich, enough in the pot to keep them going well into the future...

I'm with Irnbru on the having a real book rather than an ebook.

I'll look into it. Just so everyone is aware, this will NOT be replacing the online curry bible. If it does end up being produced in hard copy and sold for charity purposes, is will be a posh / pictuery snapshot of a certain version of the Curry Bible, and may include a couple of exclusive bits n bobs, but the free-for-all curry bible will continue to be updated etc..

I like the e-book idea, we use tablets in our kitchen for web recipes when cooking, I didnt realise the RNLI were rolling in folding - should I stop bunging pound coins in the charity boxeswhen down the coast?

I think hard copy appeals to the majority, so I'll deal with that first, converting it to an eBook should be relatively straight forward after that.

Keep chucking your coins in, I just wanted to point put there are charities out there that need the money more.
Here are the RNLIs 2011 accounts, they do quite well...

Have you thought about doing a book through photobox or someone similar? Might work out a bit pricy

To make the most money I would suggest an e-book.
Smashwords will let you publish an e book for free and let you retain 85%(through them) of the revenue (60% 15% 30%) you, them, retailer if you use ibooks or similar.
That way you would not be at risk of being financially out of pocket and all the hard work you need to put in will raise funds.
Selling a book for £20 very difficult.

I'd be up for a paper book, although would prefer closer to £10 than £20.
Of course, if someone wants to buy me and my wife iPads each, then I'd happily take an eBook version instead.

I don't know terribly much about it, but there are print-on-demand publishers out there:
Self Publish a Book - Lulu.com (http://www.lulu.com/publish/books/?cid=nav_bks)
my impression is that it gives you a fairly risk-/overhead-free way of publishing relatively small numbers of books
