Hi Admin team.

Firstly I'd like to echo the sentiments of many other members and say a great big thank you to each and every one of you for taking the time to set this place up so quickly, expertly, and generously.

I've an idea for a site feature that I believe would be of benefit to all looking for new buddies in their locale; and those planning a trip to a new area, who perhaps might like to find out which members live near and could be tapped up for useful info...

A members map.

Something like this: User Map: (IP address geo-location) (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/usermap.php)

According to the Internet such a thing is possible based on value in "location" field of user profile (reference: Member Info Map - display the location of the user with Google Maps - vBulletin.org Forum (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=163971))

Technically feasible? Too much effort for little reward*?

good idea (ish), privacy issues surface however. Plus, for me, you'd just have to put one big dot to cover the whole of Europe and Australia.....

Just guessing, but this may include all Africa, and pretty much all of Asia. You might be forced to make just one choice in your location :-)

It was used on DIRx for a while when it first started up so people could meet up. Once the initial community was built up, I am not sure it was used much.

If there is enough interest we can consider it. It was an opt in thing and you entered your details, so not that worried about the privacy thing as you don't have to be listed.

I like the idea but reckon it is better as an Opt-in and where you place the GPS co-ordinates, obviously not your house but your out house or somewhere further afield if you wish.

This could possibly tie in with putting a section onto the forum where clubs could list their details, website, location, pool, pub timings etc. If each club paid £10 per year, that would go quite a way to running the forum and could help encourage new members for clubs. Win, win..

Not if you put the location as either your club (already in the yellow pages) or nearest e.g. lds. Alternatively the centre of yiur nearest town/village.

GeoIP is notoriously inaccurate. Quite often it'll be your providers end point that can be at the other end of the country, sometimes not even the same country!
